Girls NCHSAA 1A/2A Indoor State Championships Preview: Can North Rowan dethrone Cummings?

Field

High Jump

Joya Blackwell (Hertford County) took 2nd last year with a mark of 5-2, but comes into this flight with the T-5 overall seed.  Brianna Sanders (North Brunswick) is the only girls at 5-4 this indoor season and Angel Bowden (DSA), McKenzie Scott (Queens Grant) and Angel Bowden (DSA) all at 5-2.  With 29 girls entered int his field starting at 4-6, top athletes could have to wait a while before starting their first attempts. Watch out for Peighton Simmons and Zacora McKnight (North Rowan) who have a season's best but will be looking to score crucial points in the team battle vs. Cummings.

Long Jump

Last year Kenyae Majors, Kayla Moore and Kelsia Moore (Cummings) brought home a 1-2-3 finish dominating their competition. Majors took the victory with a jump of 17-11.75 as all three were a foot further than 4th place.  This year is a whole different ball game for the Cummings athletes as this looks to be the most competitive field of the meet.  Majors and Kayla Moore come in with marks of 18-7.5 and 18-7 this season ranking them 2nd and 3rd in the classification.  Nicole Barnes and Zacora McKnight (T.W. Andrews) have both jumped over 18 feet with Barnes coming in as the top seed at 18-8.5.  This event will be a massive swing in the team battle for Cummings and T.W. Andrews as each school has 3 athletes in the event that should score, and could ultimately take the top 6 spots. All eyes should be on this event during the 1A/2A State Championships.  Kayla Moore holds the meet record at 18-3, but that should certainly go down on Friday.

Triple Jump

Peighton Simmons (T.W. Andrews) won this event last season with Kenyae Majors and Kelsia Moore (Cummings) taking 2nd and 3rd.  Simmons and teammate Zacora McKnight come in as the top seeds with marks of 37-11 and 37-9.5 this indoor season.  Moore ranks 3rd with a mark of 37-1.5.  Nicole Barnes (T.W. Andrews) is just off that at 36-8.  Cumming's Kayla Moore holds a PR in the Triple Jump of 37-6, but did not compete in the event this indoor season which is a huge swing of points for T.W. Andrews.

Shot Put

LesLeigh Tabor (Franklin) will be eyeing to defend her title from last season and take down Alex Cooke's (North Surry) indoor state record of 40-7.75 from 2014 down. Tabor is the top seed by 5 feet and has thrown over 40 feet all but once this indoor season and is undefeated in the event.  Naadiya Faison (Monroe) and Mya Roberts (Cummings) will be looking to score a big throw to take down Tabor.  Faison has throw 37-5.25 and Roberts 37-0.75 this indoor season.

Pole Vault

Last year only 5 girls met the qualifying standard indoors, but this years field is up to 12!  Emma Laughter (Hendersonville) won the event last season with a mark of 8-0, but there are 6 girls exceeding that height this indoor season. 4 girls, Leanna Seagraves (Draughn), Chelsea Johnson (DSA), Lakelyn Bass(Hobbton) and Netanya Linares (Parkwood) have jumped 9-0 this indoor season and will make an exciting event in the girls pole vault.
