Three of these girls broke 18 at WakeMed, and there was also a breakthrough cross country race from one of the state's best track runners.

  • In the boys championship race, Tanis Baldwin (East Henderson) took the early lead, with a group of 8 runners right on his heels.  Philip Hall (Terry Sanford) crossed the line first in what amounts to a huge leap forward for him, finishing the race strongly and holding off Wyatt Maxey (Providence) to win in 15:08.5 (Maxey ran 15:08.7).  Patrick Sheehan (Lake Norman), apparently running under an assumed name, also ran a fantastic race by clocking 15:17.9, overtaking William Roberson (Broughton) in the final 100 meters with a furious kick.  North Carolina runners claimed the top 7 places, and 8 of the top 10, in the race.

  • Broughton's boys continued to state their case as one of the best teams in the country, defeating Blacksburg (VA) by over 100 points to dominate the Championship race.  Apex also continued to impress with a strong 3rd-place finish.

  • Carolina Alcorta (West Springfield VA) dominated the girls championship race wire-to-wire, but having her out front seemed to up the pace for her pursuers, as well.  Defending champ Eliza Dekker (Durham Academy) finished 2nd this year, running 17:53.7.  She was followed by Cardinal Gibbons' dynamic duo of Mary Grace Doggett and Sophie Ebihara, who clocked 17:54.8 and 17:58.9, respectively.  Super frosh Lexi King (Marvin Ridge) almost broke 18 as well, coming in at 18:00.8 for fifth place.

  • Blacksburg's girls rose over the second half of the race to take the Championship title, while two NCHSAA 3A schools duked it out for second place.  In the end it was Cardinal Gibbons that held off Marvin Ridge,  with the Mavericks close enough to continue their hopes of winning the state title this year.

  • Nick Walker (NC Science & Math) won the boys' Invitational race after a sprited battle with Owen Pochettino (Reservoir MD).  Reservoir ended up getting edged out for the team title by Cosby (VA), with TC Roberson the top North Carolina team in 3rd.

  • The Ravenscroft girls took home the Invitational race trophy, led by Maddie Ringenbach's 18:55.9 win.  Arden Vessie (Corinth Holders) finished 2nd, and Reservoir (MD) was forced to go home with two runner-up trophies in two close races.

Hare & Hounds Invitational

Highlights

  • Brent Demarest (Porter-Gaud SC) won the Championship Boys  race in 15:09, edging out Austin Sprague (St. Pius X GA) by one second.  Peter Hetzel (Grace Academy) continued to impress by running 15:44 for third place, the lone North Carolina athlete in the top five.  Out-of-state runners claimed 5 of the top 10 places and 7 of the top 13.  

  • St. Pius X (GA) took the Championship Boys team title, defeating Millbrook 61 - 107.  Ardrey Kell's boys also had a strong showing, taking third.

  • Malia Ellington (Community School of Davidson) had the race to herself up front, and she cruised to a time of 18:49 only one week after finishing fourth in the Age-Group World Triathlon Championship in London.  Calysta McKinney (Castle View CO), Emily Pettis (Millbrook), and Savanna Dalton (Castle View CO) all broke 19 minutes.

  • Castle View justified the long trip by winning the girls' team title, narrowly edging out Millbrook by a score of 36-41.  Charlotte Catholic held on for third, with two teams hard on their heels.

  • St. Pius X (GA) showed outstanding depth by dominating the Boys Invitational race, then still placing an astounding 18 in the top 25 of the Boys Open race.  Millbrook's girls showed their overall program strength by taking the Girls Invitational race.

Beeson Park Invitational

Highlights

  • Nikolaus Kreiling (Jordan) rallied late, passing early leader Zach Boone (Mitchell) and then mid-race leader Ryan Shannon (North Lincoln), to win the Championship Boys race in 15:31.  Pinecrest's Robert Anderson took a big step forward, clocking 15:41 for fourth place, while Daniel Beamer (Jordan) was fifth.

  • The Pinecrest boys didn't put it all together here, but they did win, and they showed flashes of how strong they can be if they get the best from all five runners at the same meet.  Jordan was only 7 points behind, showing that the Falcons are more than just two top runners.

  • Grace Sullivan (Providence) sat out the Championship Girls race to recover from being sick, and that denied us an interested and unexpected showdown with Sara Platek (Ragsdale).  The freshman phenom made a huge leap forward by dominating this race, posting a very impressive 18:08 in the process.  Bianca Bishop and Kayla Glova took second and third for Providence, leading a total of 6 girls under 19 minutes.

  • In a battle of short-handed teams, the Providence girls (missing their #1) defeated Reagan (missing two of their top 5) by a score of 54-86.  North Lincoln edged Pinecrest by three points for third place.

  • Gil Gilreath (Northwest Cabarrus) ran a solo 15:58 in the Varsity Boys race, winning by almost 50 seconds.  Jesse Carson's boys took the Varsity Boys team title soundly, while the Northwest Cabarrus girls had to hold on to an 11-point victory in the Varsity Girls.
