Meet Info

Meet Note Per NCPrepTrack

This was the first year since 1971 that the 1-A and 2-A schools had a separate meet. From 1972 through 1985 they competed along with the 3-A and 4-A schools.

Clifton Etheridge (Hendersonville) jumped 25-0 to set a new state meet record for all four classifications. He broke the old record of 24-8 set in 1977 by Greg Artis of Wilson Fike. Etheridge jumped 25-5 in another meet and ranked third in the nation for 1986. (North Carolina also had the fourth best that year -- Hoke County's Terrell Carpenter with a 25-2.5).

Etheridge also ran a leg on the winning 1600 relay and placed third in the 200 to lead Hendersonville to an 11 point win over Salisbury.

Albemarle won the girls championship by three points over Swansboro.
