Senior Spotlight: Adam Manns

The senior from Draughn High School continues to prove that explosiveness, not size, is the key in the shot put and discus.

Through his sophomore year, Adam Manns was a good thrower; he cracked the 50-foot mark in the shot put, and also threw 143 feet in the discus.  Last spring was his breakout season in the discus, as he jumped up to over 170 feet and ended the season ranked 2nd in the state among all classifications.  His shot put marks lagged behind, though, as he only gained two feet on the previous season and ended up 18th in the state.  This year, he became more balanced as a thrower, continuing to reach the 170's while increasing to over 56 feet in the shot.  Adam continues in the mold of recent North Carolina throwing star Courtland Clavette, as he is tall and not overly huge, but has good footwork and great explosiveness.  I think you'll enjoy his explanation of why he chose to go into throwing (he didn't start out there his first track season).  As he continues to add muscle mass to his lanky frame, I think Adam will develop into a very strong all-around thrower at the college level.  He was very pleasant to talk with, and really seems to understand the value of hard work.
