There are less than two weeks until Greensboro hosts the New Balance Nationals, and many North Carolina athletes are gearing up for the last performances of the high school season. On Saturday night under the lights at Bishop McGuinness, the Cary girls looked sharp in their continuing pursuit of a sub-9:00 4x800, and several other NC athletes showed they are still in great shape after the state meets have passed. Running in the heat of Puerto Rico for the Carribean Scholastic Invitational, Samantha George turned out a US #5 clocking of 4:30.42 for the 1500 (which equates to 4:50 for the 1600 or 4:52 for the mile). Finally, in Tennessee for the Music City Distance Carnival, Matus Kriska ran 4:14.91 (NC #2 this season) for a full mile to take the win.
Multiple U.S. Track & Field Championships qualifiers highlighted the 2011 edition of the Music City Distance Carnival. Athletes proved that competition can overcome the conditions, on a night that saw record breaking heat and humidity for the event. Professional athletes lined up with collegiate and recent grads in four Invitational races for men and women that included the 800 meter, Mile run, 3,000 meter steeplechase and 5000 meter run. Middle school and high school races, as well as open races added to the excitement on the mondo surface at Vanderbilt University.
