NCISAA Championships Friday: A Glance at 1A & 2A

Unlike the boys, the 1A & 2A schools will be competing side by side for one overall state champion. The girl's team race is going to be outstanding. All season in the NCRunners.com Coaches Poll, a few of these teams have been switching around regularly. If you look at the rankings using the NCRunners database, St. Davids, Village Christian, Cary Christian, & Asheville Christian should all be in the mix.

St. Davids - ran their times earlier in the season at the Wolfpack Invitational & Great American. With two girls running in the 20's, they will need their 3-5 to close that gap as #3 is running 22:00.

Village Christian - once again, they have two girls in the 20's, the Stephenson sisters. After them, they are sort of in the same boat as St. Davids, as their 3-5 are running 21-24:00.

Cary Christian - they are a bit different than these two teams because they have 3 solid girls running in the 19 & 20's. However, their #5 needs to step up because right now they are waiting another six minutes for their 5th runner.

Asheville Christian - led by the potential winner and favorite, Whitney Thornburg, ACA will need 2-5 to step up.

So obviously reading this, the winning team will most likely be the team who has closed the gap from 1 to 5.

Thornburg (photo courtesy of Asheville Citizen Times) is the favorite as she ran 18:38 on the fast United Way course. No matter how fast the course is, she is still the overwhelming favorite. Cary Christian's top 2 ladies are ranked 2nd and 3rd, with times of 19:47 and 20:04. Aundrea Holmes & Tiffany Hagan will try and pace their team by taking these two of the top spots.
