NCISAA Championships Friday: A Glance at 3A

The North Carolina Independent Schools Athletic Associations (NCISAA) is holding its state championship this Friday in Black Mountain on Montreat's campus.

2:00 Girl's Race
2:45 Boy's Race
3:15 Awards Ceremony

Earlier this year, at the Cavalier Classic, many of the NCISAA schools competed in order to check out the course. Charlotte Latin's girls and Providence Day's boys took the wins at the Invitational and also come into this Friday as the favorites. Charlotte Latin's girls are the overwhelming favorites, as they currently have 7 girls in the top 11 based on times from the 2010 season. Providence Day's boys, however, are slight favorites, if that. Both Cary Academy and Durham Academy are right on the heels of PD, with Cary Academy taking a big win over DA at the TISAC Conference Championships. The boy's title truly seems up in the air.

The battle for the individual title on the girl's side is much closer than it was last year since last year's champ and Foot Locker finalist, Wesley Frazier, will not be competing. This season's top runner appears to be Haylee Dawe of Charlotte Latin who is coming off a new CISAA Championship record of 18:10! Haylee has had a fine season and has raced most of her competition at least once.

As discussed in the preseason article for the NCISAA, a runner who could give Haylee a challenge is Eliza Dekkar of Durham Academy. Eliza is just an 8th grader but finished 5th last year and ran away with the TISAC title by over a minute. She has the talent to be up at the front, but Haylee's determination to win may prove to be too much for the young runner. Eliza ran 18:37 at the Wolfpack Invitational where Haylee won in 18:29.

Other girls to watch:
* Ally Finical, Latin, ran 18:34 at McAlpine and beat Haylee at the last regular season meet. Was 2nd at the CISAA Championships.

* Stephanie Schauder, Cannon, ran 18;45 at Hagan Stone earlier this year and was 3rd at the CISAA Championships. 18:53 at McAlpine.

* Kameron Spence, Latin, ran 18:56 for 4th at the CISAA Champs. All-time PR of 18:36 and seasonal PR of 18:52.

* Doreen Lagemann, Forsyth Country Day, has run 19:18 this year but won the individual title at the Cavalier Classic back in September and looked very strong on the tougher course.

The girl's team race is all about Charlotte Latin as they currently have 7 of the top 10 girls in the race based on time. They currently are looking at a very low score of 23 points to win their 4th NCISAA title in a row.

2nd place and the other team trophy seems to be very much up in the air. There may be 7 other schools that could potentially claim the #2 spot on Friday.

* The Greensboro Day girls are a much improved team and are led by youngster, Kaitlyn Lingard. At the PACIS meet they had 4 girls from 19:52-21:00 and their 5th ran 22:13. They ran well at this course back in early September.

* Ravenscroft won the TISAC and are led by Elisabeth Schriker. Lexy Bader did not race, but I am not sure of her status for Friday. They are still tough without her as evident by their conference title.

* Providence Day's girls were no where to be seen or heard of for most of the season and were ranked around 7th prior to the conference championships. With their 1-5 running 20:17-21:32, they put themselves back in contention.

* Cary Academy ran great at the Wolfpack Invitational and really seemed to make a statement. They will need that kind of effort to take 2nd place.

* Forsyth Country Day could benefit having one of the only single digit scores (other than the Latin girls). However, with their 3-5 back a bit, it may be difficult to grab 2nd place.

* North Raleigh Christian was 2nd at the TISAC meet but will need their 3-5 to step up as well.

* Finally, Cannon School, is a team on the rise. On time they are 4th and have improved steadily over the season. With Schauder up front, could be dangerous.
