Cross Country Preview: NCISAA 1A/2A

**As you are reading this article/preview, please keep in mind that it is very likely that the 1A & 2A schools could be split this year. That would pretty much throw all of this out the window, but at least you still get an idea of what each team will look like coming back.

Looking at the girl's NCISAA 1A/2A teams, there appear to be 3 schools that could battle for the top spot. However, with a few schools from South Carolina also in this league, the points are slightly skewed. Spartanburg Day, Westminister Catawba, & Shannon Forest are not included here.

Asheville Christian Academy is the top returning team by the rankings, but only Whitney Thornburg can be found in track results. Whitney has been at the top of the 1A/2A classification for a couple years now and has helped develop a solid team behind her. This team was 2nd last year behind Fayetteville Academy and will obviously be looking for the top spot this coming XC season. Looks like they need to an improved 5th runner to solidify their chances.

Caldwell Academy is led by the talented Taylor Dunn who had the fastest 1600 and 800 this past track season. By these rankings, Caldwell Academy has a good 3 but will need for their 4th and 5th runners to step up this season.

A team that could very well take the top spot after a very good track season is Cary Christian. This team should have a 1, 2, 3, punch that no other school can match, but the question will lie behind them. The trio of Tiffany Hagan, Aundrea Holmes, & Caroline Stogner are going to be up there as proved by all three being among the top-5 returning in the 1600. With a surge from a couple other runners, this team could easily take the 1A/2A title.

The 4th team to keep an eye on is the always competitive Fayetteville Academy. This a team who always finds their way towards the top 3 solid returning girls, they should be once again.

Last year the individual title was won by Caitlin Selle of Westminister Catawba in Rock Hill, SC. However, she has now graduated and left a group of girls to possibly battle for the individual title.

Taylor Dunn of Caldwell Academy ran 5:25 and 2:25 this past track season and was 2nd at last year's XC state meet. She also ran an 11:52 but lost to Whitney Thornburg of Asheville Christian at the state track meet. Whitney is definitely a challenger for this title as she was 3rd, just 7 seconds behind Taylor, at the 2009 meet. These two will most likely have another close battle for the title this coming season. Hopefully both girls will be competing at the early season meet which will be held on the state meet course. It would be nice to get a preview of the state meet.

Honestly, three Cary Christian girls could all come in somewhere in the next few and could even battle it out with Taylor and Whitney for the title. This is why I give the Cary Christian girls the slight edge for the team title because they could put 3 in the top 5!

A few other names to look out for include: American Hebrew Academy's Micaela Naebryf, Kristen Stephenson of Village Christian, & Lauren Floyd and Sarah Stewart of Fayetteville Academy.

The team title for the boys looks like a no-brainer as Asheville Christian has less than half of the 2nd place team's points. Will that stand? Only time will tell. This does appear, however, to be a team destined for a great season with their entire top 5 returning from a season ago. Last year they were 2nd by a mere 9 points to Fayetteville Academy, who lost a lot behind their #1, Robert Maughan.

The one negative for Asheville Christian is their lack of depth. But, truthfully this could be said for most of the teams in this classification.

By the rankings, the next team is High Point Christian Academy who comes in with a solid 6 guys. This is a team that jumped on the radar last year and finished in 3rd place at the state meet.

Behind these teams will be a large number of teams looking to close the many gaps they have in their scoring 5. Teams like Calvary Baptist, Spatanburg Day, Fayetteville Christian, Cary Christian, and Carolina Day could be surprise teams if they see improvement from a few scoring boys.

One last team to mention is the team from Cape Fear Academy. Their returning top 5 form a nice little pack which can often do a lot of damage at a state meet. If these boys have spent the summer together, improving, then watch for them to be competing for as high as 2nd place, too.

The individual title should be one of the most exciting races in any classification, public or private, this year. Not only will it most likely be a close race, but it should also prove to be extremely fast. Scott Morgan of Calvary Baptist and Bobby Mintz of Cary Christian are two of the top returning runners in the state of NC, it just so happens they go to a couple pretty small schools.

These two boys are very familiar with one another, so both know what to expect heading into the season. Here are the personal bests for both runners, and know that Scott is the defending XC state champ.

There are other talented runners in this classification, don't get me wrong. One youngster to look out for is rising sophomore, Trevor Sleight of Carolina Day. Trevor is very good, running 16:23 as a 9th grader along with a 9:57 3200m. Robert Maughan of Fayetteville Academy also has run under 10:00 and has been near the top of the classification for his entire career. Finally, Josh Crawford from Fayetteville Christian went 4:37 and boasts a PR of 16:31. He is also one to watch.
