Kavi Gibson Wins Friday Night Lights In 15:19!

Watch Kavi Gibson win Friday Night Lights Championship race in 15:19!

In the true season opener for the 2024 cross country season here in North Carolina, the best teams and individuals the state has to offer came together for an early season battle of attrition in the marquee championship race.

Coming into the night, this race was a wide open affair on the individual side, with little of the top athletes having a true opening season 5K race yet. Main contenders Kavi Gibson of Cary Academy and Michael Haskin of Asheville had opened up their seasons showing their early season fitness; however, Haskin had run on a tough course in Tennessee, and Gibson's opener seemed not to be an all-out effort, so little could be taken away from those results, adding to anticipation for Friday nights race.

Heading into the first mile split, it was obvious Gibson meant business taking the field through in 4:48.1. Senior Tate Shore of Reagan was right there, along with the Riverside senior duo Philip Blum and Connor Tyrrell. Haskin came through at the front of the race as well in a 4:49.4 mile split. Positions mostly stayed the same through the two-mile split, with Gibson remaining in front and coming through at 9:54.6, followed by a substantial pack of Shore, Will Bradbury of Watauga, Blum, Jacob Dorsch of Pinecreast, and Haskin all in the 9:54--9:55 range.

Over the final mile, the class of the field showed as Gibson dropped the hammer, slowly but surely building an insurmountable gap on the rest of the field to emerge victorious under the lights, putting five seconds between him and runner-up Haskin, running a blistering 15:19.3 5k time, good for a new NC #1 mark, a Friday Night Lights #2 all-time event mark, and a #9 all-time Ivey Redmon course mark. Haskin showcased his trademark finishing kick to overtake third-place finisher Shore in the final meters. Haskin finished in a new NC #2 15:24.8 mark, with Shore finishing in a NC #3 15:25. Additionally, Bradbury in fourth and Blum in fifth place posted great season opening performances, running 15:31.0 and 15:34.4, respectively, to assert themselves as true contenders in the state this year.

This early season battle showcases the incredible talent North Carolina has to offer this season, and we can't wait to see how the action will shake up come the postseason!
