Sherman Ragland III: New Hurdler on the Block

1) This looks to be your first indoor season . . . is that correct? Why haven't you run in the past?

This is my first complete indoor season.Ive been roadblocked with a lot of growing pains and nagging injuries from football season.

2) What goals do you have for the indoor season?

I would like to run a 7.30 in the 55m hurdles and jump 24 feet in long jump.

3) You look to have risen to a new level in the hurdles. You have gone from a good North Carolina hurdler to one of the best. Your 7.57 in the 55m hurdles is the top in the state right now. What do you believe has been the secret to your improvement?

First and for most God because at anytime I could face a freak injury especially with the aggresion that I go over the hurdle with. My mom also cooks really well so thats a secret that she can only tell you, but seriously, I wouldnt call it a secret because everyone knows that in order to be the best at something you have to work hard. It's a matter of who is bold enough to do what it takes to get there. Thats what i was always taught.

4) North Carolina has been loaded with some of the nation's top hurdlers for the past 5 years or so . . . is there a sense of pride knowing you are part of the next group?

Yes, there is a sense of pride, it's a honor to be acknowledged as a top hurdler considering the hurdlers I've seen come out of North Carolina, such as Wayne Davis, Johnny Dutch, Booker Nunley, Lamont Jackson, and others. Hearing the word top sends chills down my body.

5) You also throw the discus and long jump? How long have you been doing those events?

I have been doing discus since the 7th grade and long jump since last year.

6) What is your favorite event to compete in?

The 55m hurdles.

7) Have you thought about outdoors at all? Do you have any goals for the upcoming season?

I plan on winning the 110m hurdles and giving someone a good run in the 300m hurdles.

8) Finally, are you planning on attending one of the National indoor meets? If so, which one?

The national meet in New York at the Armory.
