Christ the King Catholic junior Blake Nicholson threw down an impressive mark at the NCHSAA 1A XC State Championship to kick off our day of cross-country action at Ivey Redmon.
Nicholson was the favorite coming in with a 15:03 on a fast Kituwah Mound course last weekend. He proved it was not just a fast course, but that he was the real deal this morning dominating his NCHSAA 1A competition by running 15:36.
Nicholson has shown incredible improvement over the course of the season running 16:21 on this course at Friday Night Lights, running 15:45 at McAlpine at Hare & Hounds and 15:50 at WakeMed.
Nicholson won the NCHSAA 2A Outdoor 3200m State title last spring in 9:27 to add a second NCHSAA State Championship to his name. A year ago he was the runner-up in the NCHSAA 1A classification running 17:01.
He would take the individual win by 30 seconds over runner up Andrew Harding of Northside who clocked a strong performance of 16:06. Cole Fiorillo of Corvian Community School ran 16:18 for third as Joshawa Huneycutt of South Stanly and Brandon Burrows of Lejeune round out the top five finishers.
Official results and team scores will be announced in between the two sessions.
