NCHSAA 4A Indoor State Championship Preview

Sprints and Hurdles

Shawnti Jackson (Wakefield) has been nothing short of a superstar this season. She sits NC No. 1 this season in all classifications in the 55m, 60m, 300m, and 400m and sits US No. 1 in the 55m, 60m, and 300m. Her 60m dash time from two weeks ago at Millrose Games is a new high school record! Her 300m time from The VA Showcase is US No. 2 all-time.

It will be no easy feat for the Wakefield junior, as Run U Xpress teammate and Florida signee Kayla Davis (Hough) is lining up next to her in the 300m and 500m. While Jackson is US No. 2 all-time in the 300m, Davis is US No. 5 all-time. Davis holds the advantage all-time in the 500m as she is US No. 10 all-time to Jackson's US No. 30 all-time.

Akala Garrett (Harding) is not shying away from the competition by any means. The junior is the top seed in the 55mH with her NC No. 1 this season mark of 7.92. That time is good for NC T-No. 8 all-time. Senior Taylor Mckinnon (Cardinal Gibbons) has been very strong in the short hurdles this indoor season as well, and will be biting at the heels to take the win over Garrett.

Garrett is also going head-to-head with Jackson and Davis in the 300m and 500m. A win in either of those events will certainly slingshot Garrett to the top of a lot of national rankings in the sprints.

For the boys, Cameron Wright (Weddington), Lance Garrett (Rolesville), and Daunte Marshall (A.L. Brown) have all gone under 8.00 in the 55mH.

Terrell Robinson Jr. (Mount Tabor) is looking to put the final touches on a fantastic senior campaign. Robinson is US No. 1 this season in the 55m dash after his 6.25 victory at The Millrose Games. Strong challenges will come from Clayton senior Josiah Williams, Cleveland seniors Omarion Hampton and Tavion Raynor, and senior David Lampkin (Mallard Creek).

Robinson Jr. and Williams will be back in the 300m, and will be joined at the front by Myers Park senior Justice Crawford and Cuthbertson's Reece Morgan. Although Millbrook sophomore Max DeAngelo is seeded 7th, his 500m strength could help him steal a podium finish.

DeAngelo is the second seed in the 500m behind Wake Forest senior Andrew Mallo.
