The 2019 AAU Junior Olympic Games Throws Preview

WATCH LIVE: AAU JUNIOR OLYMPICS

- - -

If there's one trend in the throws at this year's AAU Junior Olympic Games, it's evident in the girls category.

The nation's top age group throwers are versatile beyond just one discipline. Five girls athletes enter leading more than one event, including 9-year-old Laila Jones (shot put, javelin), 11-year-old J'Nia Simpson (discus, shot put), 13-year-old Ja'Myah Williams (discus, shot put) and 14-year-old Carlie Weiser (discus shot put).

Perhaps more impressive is the fact that 12-year-old Chayanne Gordon enters the Games as the leader in all three events (discus, shot put, javelin).

The older competitors get, however, the more parity reigns.

Fayetteville Whitewater (GA) High School graduate Morgan Johnson, a University of Pennsylvania signee, enters her final Games as the top seed in the shot put, and the senior will look to best her top throw of 45 feet, 8 inches over the 2019 season.

In the boys throws, Quann Shears, of Richmond Academy (GA), returns as a champion from last year in the javelin (176-7) and will look to break 190 feet as the top seed.

Meanwhile, Corey Moore, the top seed in the shot put (56-8), has eyes on breaking 60 feet. And we can't forget about Blue Thunder Track Club's 11-year-old Jackson Cantwell, the top seed in the shot put who will look to reclaim the crown he won last year.
