Middle Schooler Cheyla Scott (Matthews, NC) narrowly took down the Middle School National Record today at New Balance Outdoor Nationals!  She cleared 5-11.25 to win the Junior High National Title by 6.25 inches!

Scott entered the competition at 5-1 where she cleared that as well as 5-3 on her first attempt.  She'd miss on her first attempt at 5-5, but cleared the second time around.  She'd win the competition by clearing 5-7 on her first attempt.  Only competitor left in Ariana Guerrero (Washington, DC) would miss all three attempts at 5-5.

Scott would clear 5-9.25 and 5-11.25 on her first attempt.

Scott would move up to 6-0.5 to attempt a national record for middle schoolers.  That is currently set at 6-0.  She'd go through three attempts and be just short of clearing.

Scott competed in track last in 2015 before this season.  She mainly competed in the sprints, but held a high jump PR of 4-9.

In her 8th grade year things started to explode for Scott in high jump.  Two weeks ago at the Powerade State Games she set a new PR clearing 5-8.

Scott said she cleared 5-11.5 last week in practice at a camp in Kentucky and knows she can clear 6-0 with a little more practice.

Scott will attempt Butler High School next fall where she'll compete in Volleyball, Basketball and Track.

She'll look to challenge one of the countries best All-Time High Jumpers in Morgan Smalls (Panther Creek) who will be a senior going for her 4th straight NCHSAA 4A Outdoor State title in the High Jump and has jumped 6-3.25 and is the current outdoor national leader at 6-0.75.

Only four girls in North Carolina history have jumped higher than Scott has already achieved in middle school.  It moves her just ahead of current Myers Park high jump star Addie Renner for 5th All-Time.

It is the second best jump by a North Carolina girl this year and would rank her at US No. 7 for middle and high schoolers!
