As a junior at North Mecklenburg High School he was a outdoor state champion in both the shot put and the discus with seasons best of 58-4 and 170-3 respectively. Prior to this weekend Crawford held the state lead in both events with throws of 60-7.75 and 180-11, both thrown at the Bojangles Track Classic.
Today Crawford had another breakthrough in the discus. His coach said Crawford told him prior to the Blue Ridge Classic today that "I'm going to break a meet record today," and he did just that and then some.
The previous Blue Ridge Classic meet record was 175-5 by Mooresville's Daniel McArthur.
The throw isn't just one of the best in the state and country this year, it's the 3rd best discus in North Carolina history and a new Mecklenburg County record. Only Terrell Adams (Middle Creek, 2016, 213-9) and Harlis Meaders (Sun Valley, 1988, 197-10) have thrown better than Crawford during their high school careers.
Crawford also moves just ahead of 2016 Olympian Tavis Bailey (A.L. Brown) who threw 191-2 in 2010 becoming the fourth boy over the 190 foot mark.
Adams cleared 200 feet twice in his high school career throwing 213-9 and 204-9 his senior year. Crawford is poised to potentially join him in the 200 club this spring.
Crawford has been stellar this outdoor season and is undefeated in both the shot put and the discus this outdoor season.
