Z.B. Vance had a really impressive weekend at the Bojangles Classic. Prior to the 4x100m we saw Z.B. Vance girls winning almost ever sprint prelim they competed in also advancing to the finals.
The top moment for them was the 4x100m Relay. Vance had just run 47.31 at the Queen City Relays holding the North Carolina State lead coming in. They were set to face of with teams like Southeast Raleigh, Nansemond River, Parkland, Archbishop Carroll and Hillcrest who are perennially nationally elite sprint programs.
Vance would run in lane 2 not coming into the event as the favorite.
The Cougars would get out well through their first and second leg as the top four teams handed off almost simultaneously. Southeast Raleigh broke it open on the third leg sitting just ahead of Nansemond River and Vance, but would get DQed on the handoff being out of the exchange zone.
Vance looked to be in fourth place as they handed off to anchor leg with Nansemond River on their inside in a slight lead over them, Parkland and Hillcrest. Ahlexandria Deloache would hang with Nansemond River as the two pulled ahead of the field. She'd get side by side with Team War and edge them at the line by .03 seconds!
Vance would improve on their North Carolina state leading mark running 46.31, a second faster than a week ago!
Only High Point Central (2017) and Southeast Raleigh (2016) have run faster than the Cougars. HPC's state record is 45.76 and Southeast Raleigh's NC#2 All-Time mark is 45.92.
This was a major breakthrough for Vance this weekend, and we could see them chip away at the 4x100m state record this season.
Of their 4x100m relay team only Williams is a senior.
