Interview with Samantha George of Millbrook HS

Samantha George of Millbrook has quite a resume already and she's only a rising sophomore. Samantha, seen here, won the Nike Indoor girl's freshman mile title last year and ended her 9th grade season with a PR of 5:05.90 in the 1600m. Samantha also won the Raleigh Relays 3200m in a solid time of 10:56.76.

At last year's Foot Locker South Regional she finished off a strong XC season with a 14th place finish in the Girl's Seeded race with a time of 17:48. Her time makes her the #8 returner in the region.

How has your summer training been, Samantha?
I think my summer trainning is going really well. Overall I can say I run low miles but high quality.

You are one of two athletes returning in NC that broke 18:00 last year. Has the talent of Carolyn Baskir of East Chapel Hill helped push your training?
I always strive to do my best and I believe it has helped me to push myself to continue to get better and be the best that i could be.

You had a great track season, winning the National title at Nike Indoors in the Freshmen Mile, running a 10:56, and finishing 2nd in the NCHSAA 4A 1600m. Were you pleased with your track season?

I was pretty pleased with my over all performance I got all my PRs and helped my team win our conference meet I would of like to have finished stronger at the end of the seanson though.

Did you learn anything during track season that will help you this XC season?

To become healthier in the mind and body and to remain postive and work hard to become a better runner.

Which do you prefer, track or XC?
I like both of them. Each one offers different challenges but I would have to say cross country because I like the team atmosphere and you get to run on new courses and experience different terrains.

I don't have the exact stats, but you definitely had one of the best years of any 9th grader in North Carolina history. How does it feel to be one of the top runners in state history, and only as a 9th grader?
I feel honored that I am classified as one of the top runners as a freshman. It helps me realize that you can do anything you set your mind to.

As a 9th grader you ran 17:48 at the Foot Locker South Regional, finishing 14th overall. That puts you the 7th returner in the region for this upcoming season. Is making Foot Locker Nationals a goal this season?
Yes, that is definitely one of my goals.

What other goals do you have for the upcoming season?
To continue to improve, to become stronger, and help my team succeed.

One last question, you ran a lot in middle school and it looks to have helped you thus far in your high school career. What advice would you give to younger distance runners?
The most important thing is to have fun, love what you are doing, and listen to what your body is telling you

What is your favorite XC course to race?
I liked Tanglewood because it is challenging in different ways and McAlpine because you can really run fast on that course.

Do you have a time goal for the season?
Yes I would really like to get under 18 at wake med and 17:30 at mcalpine

Are you excited about the state meet being right in your backyard at WakeMed?
I am excited about running at wake med because I will know what to expect.

Is there a meet prior to states that you are really looking forward to?
The Jungle Run because it is at night time under the lights and night time is my favorite time to run a race.
