Interview with Taylor Dewberry

Q. Taylor, thanks for taking the time to answer some questions. I guess my first question is how did it feel winning the 4A NCHSAA Indoor Championship? It came down to the 4x400, pretty exciting stuff.
A. I was pretty confident that the girls (Andrea, Jazman, Shenita) and I could handle the pressure of coming through for the team. We knew you had a shot at the state title when both Andrea and I "P.R"ed to win our events.

Q. With the state title coming down to the 4x400m relay, what was going through your head? Were you confident your team could win? Was there any doubt?
A. We were really nervous about the Weddington team because we saw the low times that their mile relay posted during the polar bear season. Although we were fairly confident we could lower our time as well, since we hadn't run the 4x400 since December. But when your lead off leg Andrea got us out to the lead we knew we were on our way to winning.

Q. You've had a very successful 2009 thus far both indoors and outdoors, running 57 for the 400 indoors and then throwing down a 55.75 this past weekend at the 49er Classic. What are your goals from here on out this season?
A. I would like to significantly lower my 200 meter time to compete with the many talented young woman in 4A states. I'd like to win the 400 meter at states and finally break my personal record of 55.46 (2006).

Q. Your 55.75 moves you into the top-20 NC All-Time performers in the 400m dash. The top time is 52.74 and then drops back to 54.32, can you jump into that gap?
A. This year i hope to get the number 2 spot but i'll probably aim for number one my senior year.

Q. What is your favorite workout?
A. I enjoy running 200 repeats. Where you run 6 200s with 60 seconds rest. But in order to get better i like to vary my workouts.

Q. When did your training begin for the indoor season?
A. I took 2 weeks off after AAU season and I was back on the track working by labor day.

Q. What meets are you looking forward to the most during the upcoming outdoor season?
A. The Taco Bell classic. It will fun to run againist talented athletes such as Briana Nelson and her teamate.

Q. What has been the coolest, most exciting experience you've had during your track career?
A. The most exciting race for me was anchoring the 4x400 relay at the 2008 state meets. It all came down to our team and Ben. L Smith high school I loved handling the pressure with the state title on the line.

Q. Have you begun thinking about college yet? Can you reveal any colleges that could be at the top of your list?
A. Right now i am in the begining of exploring all my options. I know for sure that i would like to run Division 1 track and i'd also like to go to a school which focuses on both academics and athletics. As far as top choices, Duke, Virginia Tech and Wake Forest are high on my list.

Q. Who has been your biggest inspiration as an athlete?
A. There have been alot of influential people in my life such as my mom, Coaches Perry Cabean and Anthony Brannon, but most importantly i'd have to say my father. He takes the time to come and coach me here in Winston although he lives and works in Spartanburg, South Carolina. A typical example of his dedication is the day after having surgery he was right there timing my 200 split at the 49er classic.
