Interview with Nnenna Okwara

Q. First off, how does it feel to be apart of a successful track program like Charlotte Latin?
A. I really enjoy being a part of Charlotte Latin’s track program because we all get along well and support each other at track meets. It’s not about the winning, although it doesn’t hurt, but the cohesiveness of the group and the ability to meet and talk to people that I hardly see during the year all while doing something I love.

Q. When did you start throwing the shot and disc?
A. I started throwing as a freshman because I needed a sport in the spring and track seemed like the best option since there is no running in a shot put circle.

Q. Also, I noticed you began throwing the weight this indoor season. How is it different than the other two events? When did you start throwing the weight bag?
A. I started throwing the weight this past November. Coach Harrison recommended it as a good complement to shot put for the indoor season. I really enjoy throwing it and hope to be able to continue working at it during college next year.

Q. Nnenna, it seems you have improved a great deal since last May. You've gone from 34' to 39' in the shot put and 104' to 121' in the discus. What do you contribute to your improvement?
A. I think the top reason I improved in shot and discus this year is that I started practicing with a lot more intensity during the off season especially in the weight training department. This gives me a lot more explosiveness and power when I throw.

Q. I've known Coach Harrison for sometime now. We both competed for UNCC back in college. How long have you been working with him? Do you have different hours of practice than the rest of Latin's team?
A. I started working with Coach Harrison during my sophomore year when I began to occasionally go to weekend practice and began lifting weights for the first time.  Today, I still go to Latin practices since he coaches for Latin, but I also go to his night practice if I feel I did not practice enough at Latin. I also usually go to practice on Sunday afternoons.

Q. When did you begin throwing and getting ready for this outdoor season?
A. I began throwing late November in preparation for Indoor Season and did not officially throw for outdoor until after Nike Nationals, which was March 13-15.

Q. Do you have a strength program that you are on as well? Can you describe some things that you do?
A. My strength program consists of 4 days of weight training: two designed for upper body strength and two for lower body. My workouts include bench, squats, power cleans, and triceps burnout where you take a curl bar and press it 50 times not stopping until your arms give out. At the end of every workout we also do an abs workout to develop strength in the core.

Q. What has been your favorite experience thus far as a track and field athlete?
A. One of my favorite experiences as an athlete was last summer when I, along with my AAU throwing team, went to Tennessee for the regional track meet. Although the weather was blistering hot we were still all smiles because we all get along well, love to throw and really love supporting each other. Another would be when Latin swept last year’s track meet, talk about exhilarating.

Q. What goals do you have for the upcoming NCISAA outdoor season?
A. One of my goals for this season is to help Latin girls track team win states for the fourth year in a row. I would also like to break the state record in both of my events.

Q. As an athlete, who has been your biggest inspiration?
A. My biggest inspiration has been my family who has always believed in me, thinking I can be the best especially when I had no confidence in myself.  What I do, I do in their name.
