Way Beyond a Streak: NCISAA 3A State Meet Recap

Boys NCISAA 3A State Meet Recap

There were three double winners on the boys' side of the competition - two of them expected and the other a HUGE surprise.  Chantz Sawyers (High Point Christian) lived up to his billing, cruising to a 47.74 win in the 400 and then turning on the jets to clock a 21.26 NC #1 in the 200.  This is the meet where he burst onto the scene one year ago, and now he has 4 titles on his resume, with another year yet to go!  Isaac Johnson (Providence Day) won the 100 Hurdles in 14.45, and also claimed his second high jump title, clearing 6' 5".  Johnson nearly became the only male triple winner of the meet, but he was edged out in the 300 Hurdles by Niko Harrell (Rabun Gap), 37.95 - 38.31.

On the other hand, Samuel Goldstein (Asheville School) came into the race with lifetime PR's of 4:37 and 2:01, at least according to the information in our system.  When he got to the meet, though, he went out of his mind: he won the 1600 in 4:19.65 and then doubling back to take the 800 in 1:56.46!  This guy must have been sandbagging during his recent races (which he won), because I did NOT see this coming.

Sawyers helped his team run away with the 4x400 to end a day where each relay was won by a different school: Charlotte Country Day took the 4x100, Charlotte Latin the 4x200, and Durham Academy the 4x800.

Like the girls, no field event athlete could earn two wins.  The closest to it were throwers Billy Edwards (Metrolina Christian) and Robert Fuller (Charlotte Latin) - Edwards won the discus and Fuller the shot put, and each was fourth in the opposite throw.  Tyrek Funderburk (Metrolina Christian) dominated the triple jump, his mark of 44' 1" winning by well over a foot.
