Weekend Recap - Chick-Fil-A, Simplot, Pepsi National

 

Some of North Carolina's top athletes competed this past weekend - in Idaho, in New York, and a little closer, Chapel Hill.

With the stellar season that NC was already having, you would expect these kids to perform well and that they did. Mulitple US top 10 performances were met and even two US #1's.

Simplot Games

  • In the boy's 200m, West Charlotte had two sprinters go under 22.00, and both are now ranked among the top 10 in the US. Demario House won the event in 21.87, earning him a US #5 ranking. His teammate, Bobby Grier, ran 21.89 for 3rd place. His time is now tied for 7th in the US.
  • Their West Charlotte teammmate, Nyosha Bryant, also ran well over the weekend. She dropped a 24.32 in the 200m dash, good for 2nd in the event. Her time also ranks her 2nd in the US. Bryant also ran the 60m dash in 7.68, which placed her 4th overall.
  • In the 200m, West Charlotte's Shequyra Guy also ran well, hitting 25.08, good for 5th overall.
  • Malai Walker of Charlotte Latin traveled with the West Charlotte gang and ran both the 60m dash and the 200m dash. In the 60m dash, she ran a new PR of 7.80 and in the 200m, she hit 25.38.
  • There were pretty fast times in the boy's 400m dash, as Bobby Grier took 4th overall, but his time of 49.02 was good enough for 10th in the US.

Carolina Chick-Fil-A Inviational

  • Southern Durham's Jacinda Evans competed in both the 200m and the long jump. She has been soaring in the long jump this year and on Saturday jumped out to a new personal best of 19-06.25. Her jump has moved her into the #2 US spot. She also ran a 25.71 in the 200m.
  • Dominique Weather's of Vance has been having an outstanding season. She ran both the 200m and the 60m dashes. In the 60m dash she ran 7.68 and the 200m she hit 25.25.
  • Stormy Kendrick of Forestview stepped onto the indoor track for only the 2nd time all year. She ran 7.62 in the 60m dash, which has her just on the outside of a top 10 US ranking, she is currently 11th in the US and tied with Bryant for NC's #1 time.
  • In the girl's triple jump, Sherice Walker stretched out to a US #6 mark of 39-01.25. This Cummings' star continues seems to be hitting her stride as she just earned meet MVP at the 1A/2A/3A state meet. She also ran 8.84 in the 60mH.
  • Lacreasha Jones of Cummings also ran well in the 60mH, running a PR of 9.18. She is ranked in the top 30 of the US, too.
  • Finally, Scott Houston of NW Guilford, continued his solid pole vaulting. He won the event, a college event, with a vault of 16-04.75. Scott will look to crack 17' soon. He is currently ranked #3 in the US.

Pepsi National HS Hall of Fame Invitational

  • The New Bern team decided to go up to the New York Armory and throw down some fast times. They came away with two US #1's. In the 4x800, New Bern ran 7:46.94. This time is a US #1 and is a new NC All-Time #1 for indoors. They also ran the Sprint Medley, cruising to a fantastic time of 3:31.66. So, will they run both at the National meet or will they run one? Can't wait to see what these speedy boys decide to do.
  • Their New Bern teammate, Fuquawn Green, is back after an absence at the state meet. He won the 55m dash in a time of 6.42.
  • Knightdale also ran in the SMR and finished 3rd. They rocked a time of 3:36.45 which ranks them 4th in the US.
