Teams to Watch
By returning 5K rankings, South View's girls are set to dominate the region - and the Tigers also lead the returning 1600 and 3200 rankings from track season. But not so fast! The transfer of Kate Sanborn to Pinecrest puts them pretty close to even with South View coming out of the spring season, and tightens up the title race immensely. Behind those two, the race for the last two advancing spots could also be very competitive, with New Hanover and Hoggard the likeliest candidates. Keep an eye on a Laney team that had some very good track results - if that built into a strong summer, they could crash the top 4.
Athletes to Watch
Taylor Delaney (South View) has the fastest returning time in the region, but Rachel VonCannon (Pinecrest) is the defending regional champion. Kate Sanborn (now at Pinecrest) has typically been stronger on the track than on the course, but the change in training styles could bring her into contention during her senior season. Watch out for Janay Hall (South View), who seemed to make "the leap" during track season and could be the heir apparent to the regional throne when this year is over, as she is the top-ranked junior coming into the season. The wild card in the 4A East is Chloe Cox (South Central) - was her USATF JO national championship in the steeplechase a sign of improvement, or was it something that took away from her preparation for cross country?
