Girls Distance Race

If there's one race I'm looking forward to on Saturday, it's the girls' 800. Julia Brown (Cary) leads three girls with PR's in the 2:14's, as she is pursued by G'Jasmyne Butler (Leesville Road) and Maddie McHugh (Hough). In fact, all the girls' distance races should be very competitive. In the 1600, Elly Henes (Green Hope) may be the closest thing to a heavy favorite with her 4:56, although you can't count out Grace Sullivan (Providence). Henes also has a good shot at winning the 3200, but the top seed there is Caroline Yarbrough (Page), and a championship would be the fitting conclusion to her amazing senior year. Don't forget about Kathleen Mansure (Watauga) in the 3200, either - with three girls capable of going sub-10:30, that race could be decided partly by the temperature, as nobody has really had a chance to acclimate to 80-degree heat this season.
