Greensboro Invitational Preview

Sixty-four high school teams and eighteen college teams will head to Hagan Stone Park this weekend for the Greensboro Invitational. Teams from Virginia, Maryland, West Virginia, South Carolina, Tennessee, and North Carolina will all hit up the mostly wooded course. Hagan Stone is not the most spectator friendly course, but it is a favorite of a lot of runners. The course is relatively rolling the entire way and winds mostly through the woods before hitting grass for the final 800 meters. Times are often similar to the well-known McAlpine Park as there are a number of downhills. Attack them and you’ll possibly run a new personal best.

Running a personal best looks like something that’s going to happen a lot in this year’s races. The talent that will be at Hagan Stone may be the strongest in the meet’s history.

In the girl’s team race, Science Hill of TN comes in as the highest ranked team in the Southeast. They are receiving votes to be ranked in the NTN poll and finished a strong 2nd at the Eye Opener. Chapel Hill’s girls are running strong again and were just voted #1 in the NC All-Classification girl’s poll. Look for these two teams to battle for the team title. Chasing them will be a number of teams: #1 3A Cardinal Gibbons, #2 3A Durham School of the Arts, and #2 NCISAA Forsyth Country Day.

There are plenty of individuals in the girl’s races to lookout for:
Allie Scalf, Science Hill (TN)
Heather Beichner, Cardinal Gibbons
Hannah Orders, Hopewell
Courtney Whittingham, Mount Tabor
Teal McLean, NW Cabarrus
Kathryn Dispennette, Northwood
Cory Catlett, Terry Sanford
Kaleigh Wood, Franklin County (VA)
Janel Reeves, Brookville (VA)
Molly Spencer, Chapel Hill
Maegan Whiting, North Raleigh Christian
Lucy Love, Marvin Ridge
Lizz Roution, Millbrook
Madison Stark, Chapel Hill
Molly Baker, Caridnal Gibbons
Aimee Rider, Terry Sanford

Look for Scalf, Biechner, and Whittingham to race at the front. They all have personal best times of under 19:00.

The boy’s team race should be a great one. Two of North Carolina’s top 5 teams will both be racing, Green Hope (4th) and Chapel Hill (5th). Along with them will also be plenty of other talented teams. Mount Tabor is ranked 6th in 4A, East Forsyth is ranked 7th, Nash Central just won the Open Race at the Wolfpack Invitational, Watauga and West Johnston are both receiving votes in 4A. Look out for West Johnston is their #1 Dakota Peachee is running, they are better than their ranking.
Individually speaking, there are a number of runners to check out. One, Taylor Gilland of Chapel Hill, should lead the way and probably will throw down one of the best times ever run at Hagan Stone. Alan Webb holds the course record of 14:36, which he set back in 2000 running splits of 4:40 and 9:20.
Taylor Gilland, Chapel Hill
Mark Sullivan, Cardinal Gibbons
Patrick Crawford, East Forsyth
Zak Roshdy, Green Hope
Timmy Raiford, Mount Tabor
Dillon Hawley, Nash Central
Zach Brantley, Northern Nash
Chase Fisher, NW Cabarrus
Dakota Peachee, West Johnston
Kelly Marsh, West Johnston
Doug Black, Green Hope
Ben Vollmer, Watauga
Jack Marshall, Chapel Hill

I could’ve put the entire Green Hope team in that list, as I expect them to come out and light it up. After watching them at the Hagan Stone Relays, I fully expect them to continue stepping it up and ultimately challenge Broughton and Enloe. Chapel Hill will show improvement from their run at Wolfpack and should finish second. The battle for third is up in the air, but I’m going to take West Johnston over Mount Tabor.
