Green Hope boys, Gibbons girls dominate 5 Stage Relays

5 Stage 8-Mile Relay Recap

The girl’s race was easily won by Cardinal Gibbons in a very swift time of 48:03. Gibbon’s is currently ranked #1 in the 2A Coaches Poll and have been the whole season thus far.

Last week, however, Durham School of the Arts had a fine performance at the Seahawk Invitational and earned a vote for 1st place in 2A. That may have fired Gibbon’s up for this weekend’s relay race. Maybe they felt like they had something to prove.

None-the-less, they did. Gibbons looked very strong as they placed their A team in 1st and their B team in 3rd. The only team to split them up was the 5th ranked 4A girl’s team, Cary High School.

Check out their A team’s splits:
Heather Beichner – 9:09
Halsey Merritt – 9:38
Molly Baker – 9:41
Leah Vaughn – 9:42
Sarah Rapp – 9:53
(Thanks to Coach Fenton for splits)

Heather Beichner looked great on the final leg. She didn’t have another team to race, but she did have plenty of teams to try and lap. Last year she split 9:19 on the same course, so beware, she’s running faster already this season. (FYI: Beichner ran 18:10 and finished 26th in the Foot Locker South seeded race last season after winning the 2A state title)

The boy’s race was dominated by Green Hope, as they beat the #1 ranked 3A team, Moorseville, along with many others. Green Hope looked very strong coming off their 3rd place finish at last weekend’s Seahawk Invitational. Green Hope, like the #1 ranked Broughton, has a strong pack. The Green Hope pack is simply 10-15 seconds away from the Broughton pack. This team has their sights set on a state title and they looked very determined at Hagan Stone.

Here are the splits for their 5 runners:
Zak Roshdy – 7:52
Scott Hefner – 7:58
Brian Pahle – 8:06
Doug Black – 8:08
Bryan Spreitzer – 8:12
(Thanks to Coach Miragliuolo for splits)
