USATF Jr. Olympic National Championship Updates

The meet really didn't get started for North Carolina athletes until its 3rd day, Thursday the 26th.

Sunday, Day 6

Many finals are being run today and North Carolina had a lot of athletes qualify as you can read below.

Gabrielle Glenn of Providence finished in the 8th spot in the Young Women's 100m dash finals. Gabrielle ran a time of 11.92 in the finals, but her fastest time was 11.83 which she ran in the prelims. Good job, Gabrielle.

Zakiya Tyson of Jordan continues to run personal bests. She finished 4th overall in the Intermediate Girls 100m dash with a time of 11.99. This her first time to break the 12 second barrier! Congrats, Zakiya.

In the Young Women's 400m hurdles, Cumming' Latoya James ran away from the field winning by a full second. Latoya ran 59.09(her PR) at the Russell Blunt meet last weekend, but shattered that time today. Latoya ran 58.23 as she rolled to a National Junior Olympic Title!

Providence Day's Mimi Morlu, who had the fastest time in the prelims, didn't fair as well in the finals. Mimi finished 8th with a time of 1:08.81, due to a tumble at the 200m mark in the race. Mimi's fastest time was 1:01.94 in the prelims.

In the Young Men's 400m dash, Douglas Byrd's Aaron Anderson ran well. In the prelims, Aaron ran a huge PR of 47.42. His time in the finals was slower but still his 2nd fastest ever. Aaron ran 48.09 to finish 4th overall. Well done, Aaron!

Jack Britt's Jordan Locklear, whose PR looked to be only 4:40 during track season, finished 9th in the Young Men's 1500m finals. His time was MUCH better than 4:40, as he ran 4:13.41 over the 1500m distance. That converts to around 4:29 for 1600 meters. Congrats, Jordan.

Well, as I predicted, and probably anyone could have, a new National record was set. In the Intermediate Boys 110m hurdles, SE Raleigh's Wayne Davis III ran 13.74 to win the event. Wayne set a new National Youth record and a new Junior Olympic meet record. Read below for more specifics, but he broke Johnny Dutch and William Wynne's previous records.

Cumming's Latoya James was at it again in the hurdles. This time she didn't win, but did run an incredibly fast time in the 100m hurdles, 13.38, for 2nd place. Latoya's previous best time was 13.67, so you can see that she destroyed that. I honestly don't know what to say about her, she is running at another level right now. The UNC Tarheels look to have gotten real talent headed their way. I'm not sure if Latoya's time will count on the all-time NC list since she already graduated, but just for some perspective . . . Latoya's time would rank her #1. The next fastest time in state history is 13.54.

The final events of the meet are the 4x400. In the girls Young Women's event, Track Eastern's team placed 4th with a time of 3:44.48. The team was made up of Athens Drive's Christy Johnson, SE Raleigh's Ebonie Cunningham, Jacksonville's Brandy Swann, & South Central's Kelsey McCorkle. Ebonie and Christy were #1 and #2 in NC this past track season over 400 meters.

Finally, the Young Men's 4x400. New Bern's Hendrix twins, Andrew and Anthony were joined by Green Hope's Ian Williamson, and Nash Central's Handy Dawes to place 6th overall. They ran a very quick time of 3:13.45.

Saturday, Day 5

In the Intermediate Girls 400m hurdles, Providence Day's Mimi Morlu ran extremely well. Mimi, the NCISAA 400m & triple jump state champion, didn't compete in the hurdles during her freshman track season, but has taken a liking to them this summer. Mimi ran the fastest time in the prelims, and a new PR, or 1:01.94.

The Young Women's 400m hurdles also took place. Latoya James of Cummings who ran 59.09 last weekend and set a new record at the Russell Blunt Invitational qualified for the finals. She ran 1:01.80 to qualify with the 5th fastest time. Jasmine Isley of Charlotte Latin was 10th and just missed qualifying with a time of 1:02.98. Asheville's Sophia Treakle was 11th and ran a new personal best of 1:03.14.

Kenneth Rowland of Northside(2A) High School competed in the Intermediate Boys hammer throw. This is unusual event for North Carolina shot and discus throwers because it isn't a state meet event. He did well, throwing it 145' 8". Kenneth's throw earned him 8th place in the competition.

They seem to be turning out the talent out there on the coast at New Bern HS. Fuquan Green who will be a sophomore next year ripped up the 200m dash placing 2nd in the Intermediate Boys competition. By Milesplit's database, his PR was 21.76, today in the finals, he threw down a 21.30.

In the Young Women's 200, Gabrielle Glenn of Providence had qualified for the finals with a 24.06. Her prelim time was a new personal best, her previous time of 24.50 was from the 4A state meet. However, today she bettered even the 24.06, cracking 24 seconds for the 1st time in her career. Gabrielle clocked a 23.85 which was good enough for 6th place.

After setting a new World Youth Record in the 36" 110 hurdles, it almost doesn't seem fair for Wayne Davis III of SE Raleigh to compete against in the US. But as we know in sports, anything can happen. Wayne ran 14.06 in his prelims to win his heat. His time was also the fastest as he moves into the finals. Look for Wayne to press the Youth National record and the JO Record in the finals. Johnny Dutch holds the National Youth Record at 13.82, and William Wynne who Davis defeated at the World Youth Games in the Czech Republic holds the Jnior Olympic record in 13.83.

Patience Coleman of Southern Durham is used to winning and used to competing against the best. During her high school years, she has competed all over the US in National meets and even outside of the US. Her experience and talent paid off as she won the Young Women's high jump competition with a leap of 5' 8.75".

I've talked about Latoya James of Cummings so much this summer, so I'll just leave it at this . . . she ran the fastest time in the Young Women's 100m hurdle prelims. She ran a very quick time of 13.71, close to her best ever.

Track Eastern's Young Women's 4x100 team of Kelsey McKorkle, Ebonie Cunningham, Christy Johnson, and Jay' Vonne Bowman finished 7th with a time of 46.65. This is the same team that ran in the prelims.

Friday, Day 4

SORRY FOR MISSING THIS ONE AT FIRST. Jordan Locklear of Jack Britt has qualified for the finals in the Young Men's 1500m. Jordan ran a 4:16.14 which is equivalent to a 4:35ish full mile. This, by Milesplit results, would be a personal best for him. I have his PR being 4:40, so Jordan looks to be running well this summer.

Gabrielle Glenn of Providence qualifed for her 2nd finals of the meet. Gabrielle qualified for the 200 yesterday and ran 11.83 to qualify for the finals of the Young Women's 100m. She qualified 7th in the prelims.

In the Intermediate Girls 100m prelims, Jordan's Zakiya Tyson won her heat and qualifed for the finals. Zakiya ran 12.08 to qualify with the 4th fastest time. Her time was just two one hundredths off her PR of 12.06. She ran 12.11 at the 4A state meet to finish 3rd to Gabby Mayo and Gabrielle Glenn.

Southeast Raleigh's Chrishawn Williams, the indoor & outdoor 4A triple jump state champion, jumped 17' 8.25" in the Intermediate Girls long jump. Her leap gave her a top 10 finish, actually placing her 10th overall.

In the Young Women's triple jump, two North Carolina athletes finished among the top 10. Western Guilford's Radiance Basden, the 3A outdoor state champion, placed 6th with a mark of 38' 8.25". Joining her was Southern Durham's Jacinda Evans who placed 9th with a mark of 37' 6".

Two North Carolina athletes ran 47's in the prelims of the Young Men's 400m dash, but only one made the finals. Aaron Anderson of Douglas Byrd ran 47.42 to finish 2nd in his heat. His time was the 3rd fastest time in the prelims and was a new personal record for him. Ian Williamson of Green Hope also ran fast, clocking 47.97, however due to slower heats did not make the finals. His time was the 7th fastest in the prelims.

Lincoln Carr of Pine Forest, who yesterday finished 6th in the triple jump, had another solid day of jumping, this time in the Young Men's long jump competition. Lincoln placed 3rd overall with a jump of 23' 11.50", just 1/2 an inch off his best. Again, Lincoln won both the triple jump and long jump at the state championships this year. He graduates in 2009. Austin Davis of Northern Durham, who finished 5th in the long jump yesterday, finished 9th today in a very competitive event. Austin jumped 23' 3.50" which is only a couple inches off his best.

In the Intermediate Boys long jump event, North Mecklenburg's Craig Williams placed among the top boys. He jumped 44' 11.50" which was good for 4th place overall. Craig finished 5th at the 4A state meet, but this jump looks to be about an 8 inch personal best.

The Young Women's 4x100 prelims were very fast and Track Eastern's team qualified with the 8th fastest time. The team was made up of Christy Johnson from Athens Drive, Ebonie Cunningham of SE Raleigh, Kelsey McCorkle of South Central, and Jay' Vonne Bowman (don't have a record of her school). They ran 46.37 to capture the final qualifying time for the finals.

Thursday, Day 3

Austin Davis of Northern Durham who has the indoor national champion this past year seems to be finding his old form. Outdoors didn't go as well for him, but he popped a 49' 9.75" yesterday to place 5th overall in the Young Men's competition. Pine Forest's Lincoln Carr, who had a very good track season, winning 4A state titles in both the long jump and the triple jump. Lincoln jumped his personal best , as Milesplit shows, with a mark of 48' 8". This earned him one spot behind Austin in 6th.

In the Young Women's long jump, Latoya James of Cummings continued her excellent summer of competition. Latoya, a Tarheel to be, has competed all over this summer, Indiana, Illinois, the Caribbean, NC, and now California. Everywhere she has been she has found herself at the top of the competition. She jumped 19' even to finish 2nd in the event. By NCRunners.com results, this is the 2nd time Latoya has hit the 19' mark. Jacinda Evans of Southern Durham also placed in the top 10 while representing NC(Durham Striders) in CA. Jacinda jumped 18' 3.25" to place 9th overall.

Two North Carolina girls finished in the top 10 in the Intermediate Girl's triple jump. Tristine Johnson of Jordan finished in the 8th spot with a jump of 37' 7.25". Southeast Raleigh's Chrishawn Williams finished one place behind Tristine with a jump of 37' 2.25".

There were some athletes who qualified for later rounds. They were as follows:

  • Gabrielle Glenn of Providence qualified for the Young Women's finals with a with a time of 24.06.
  • Fuguan green of New Bern ran 21.80 to qualify for the Intermediate Boy's finals. His time was 4th in the semi's.
  • Track Eastern's Young Man's team qualified for the finals of the 4x400 with a time of 3:13.50. They placed 6th in the semi's with Ian Williamson of Green Hope, Anthony Hendrix of New Bern, Drew Tucker of West Stokes, & Darius Law of SE Raleigh.
  • Track Eastern's Young Women's team also qualified for the next round with a 3rd place in the semi's. They ran a very impressive time of 3:44.28 with Christy Johnson of Athens Drive, Ebonie Cunningham of SE Raleigh, Brandy Swann of Jacksonville, and Kelsey McCorkle of South Central

Wednesday, Day 2

Track Eastern's Young men's team placed 2nd overall with a fine time of 7:43.30. Only two athletes names are listed, but I am aware of one other. When I receive confirmation of the 4 athletes, I will complete the list here. The 3 I know are, Drew Tucker of West Stokes, Handy Dawes of Nash Central, Anthony Hendrix & Andrew Hendrix of New Bern.
