NCRunners\' USATF Youth Championships Coverage

 

North Carolina athletes came away with many personal bests in this six-day meet. Congrats to everyone that competed!

 

The Durham Striders team placed 2nd overall in the Young Women's division. They were led by Latoya Jame and Jacinda Evans. See below for their overall placings. 

 

*Due to the large amount of events, I will be focused on the HS athletes only. If time permits, I will check out the results of the younger athletes. Do check the results yourself.

Girls Long Jump-Young Women

Latoya James, Burlington Cummings grad, continued her summer of traveling and success. Latoya finished 3rd with a jump of 18-05.25.

Jacinda Evans, Southern Durham, also finished in the top 10. Her jump of 17-08.25 placed her 7th.

 

Girls Triple Jump-Intermediate Girls

Sherce Walker, Burlington Cummings, also has traveled quite a bit this summer. She finished 2nd with a mark of 37-09.50. 

Mimi Morlu, Providence Day, finished 6th in the event with a jump of 36-00.75.  

Her summer teammate, Arielle Ratchford of Butler, was 7th with a mark of 35-08.75.

 

Boys Shot Put-Intermediate Boys 

Burlington Cummings' Montrell Morrow, threw 145-08, 4 ft. off his personal best. His throw placed him 2nd overall. 

 

Girls 800m-Young Women 

Ericka Charles, Durham School of the Arts qualified for the finals. Her time of 2:21.76 earned her the 8th and final spot.

 

Boys Long Jump-Intermediate Boys 

North Meck's Craig Williams jumped 20-05.25 to place 3rd overall.

Toddrick McFadden of West Charlotte finished 6th with a leap of 20-02.25. 

 

Boys Triple Jump-Young Men 

Northern Durham's Austin Davis, indoor national champion this year, finished 4th with a mark of 46-05.25.

 

Girls Discus-Intermediate Girls

Aslynn Halvorson of Butler finished 2nd in the event, just 2 feet out of first. Her throw was 144-04. 

 

Girls 4x400m Relay-Intermediate Girls 

The Durham Striders team of Najah Radford, Tristine Johnson, Montrece Jordan, & Molly Harkavy qualified for the finals. They ran 4:10.56.

Girls 100m Dash-Intermediate Girls

Stormy Kendrick of Forestview, ran very well and qualified 1st. She ran a time of 12.34 in the prelims. 

 

Girls Long Jump-Intermediate Girls 

Brittany Wilkins of Cummings HS finished 5th overall with a leap of 18-03.00. That is a big PR for her by NCRunners.com results. 

Kellie Smith of Vance also had a big PR. She finished 9th with a jump of 17-03.25.

Providence Day's Mimi Morlu was 10th with a jump of 17-00.25.  

 

Girls Triple Jump-Young Women 

Southern Durham's Jacinda Evans finished 2nd in the event with a PR. She bettered her previous best by .75 inches. She jumped 38-00.75.

 

Boys Long Jump-Young Men

Austin Davis of Northern Durham finished 7th with a leap of 22-02.25.

 

Boys triple Jump-Intermediate Boys

North Meck's Craig Williams had a mark of 43-05.75 which placed him 2nd overall.  

His Charlotte Flight teammate, Jarrett Blakeney was 3rd overall with a mark of 42-02.25.

Toddrick McFadden of West Charlotte, and also of Charlotte Flight, finished 5th. He jumped 41-09.75.   

Finally, Kyle Turrentine of Durham Striders, was 6th with a jump of 40-10.50. 

 

Girls Shot Put-Intermediate Girls 

Aslynn Halvorson of Butler finished off a very good meet with another 2nd place. She threw 41-11.25 which is a new personal best for her. 

 

Girls 400m Dash-Youth Girls

Garinger's T-Shelia Mungo ran a new personal best. Her time of 58.63 just missed qualifying for the finals. She was 9th overall.

 

Girls 400m Dash-Intermediate Girls 

Mimi Morlu of Providence Day qualified for the finals. Mimi is coming off a PR in the emerging elite 400 at NON of 56.95. Mimi ran 57.22 and qualified 5th.

Riverside's Montrece Jordan also qualified for the finals. She ran a PR of 58.59 to qualify 7th. 

 

Girls 4x100 Relay-Intermediate Girls

Montrece Jordan, Brittany Wilkins, Sherice Walker, and Najah Radford of the Durham Striders qualified 4th with a time of 48.45.

 

Girls 4x100 Relay-Young Women 

The Durham Striders' ladies, Latoya James, Ericka Charles, Jacinda Evans, & Kia Haskins qualified 2nd with a time of 47.53.

Girls 400m Hurdles-Intermediate Girls

In her 4th event, Mimi Morlu of Providence Day qualified for the finals. She clocked a time of 1:05.32, a PR, to qualify in the 8th spot.

Sherice Walker of Burlington Cummings just missed qualifying with her time of 1:06.04. She finished in the 9th position. 

 

Girls 400m Hurdles-Young Women 

Latoya James of Cummings, had the fastest time in qualifying, running 1:00.41. This is a new PR for Latoya.

Jasmine Isley of Charlotte Latin also qualified for the finals. She was 7th with a time of 1:03.46. 

 

Girls 100m Hurdles-Intermediate Girls

Sherice Walker of Cummings finished 3rd in 14.66. This qualified her for the finals to be run tomrorow.

Jordan's Tristine Johnson ran 15.38. She just missed qualifying for the finals in 9th position.

 

Girls 800m Finals-Young Women

Ericka Charles of Durham School of the Arts ran a personal best in the finals. She clocked a 2:20.54 and finished 6th overall. 

 

Girls 4x100m Relay Finals-Young Women

The Durham Striders team of James, Charles, Haskins, & Evans finished 2nd just as they qualified. Their time was more impressive as they ran 46.87. 

 

Girls 4x100m Relay Finals-Intermediate Girls

Durham Striders' Jordan, Walker, Radford, & Wilkins ran 48.35 in the finals, bettering their time of 48.45 from the prelims. They also bettered their finish as they placed 3rd.

Girls 100m Dash Finals-Intermediate Girls

Forestview's Stormy Kendrick ran a big PR to win the event. She ran 11.70 and her previous best was 11.95. (was wind-aided)

 

Girls 400m Hurdle Finals-Young Women

Latoya James of Cummings continues to roll in the hurdles. The Tarheels are very lucky to receiving an athlete like her next year. Latoya won with a time of 59.57! Fastest time in North Carolina history.

Charlotte Latin's Jasmine Isley, mulit-state champ in the NCISAA, finished 6th with a fine time of 1:02.22. That's her fastest time of the year and maybe ever. 7th fastest time in NC history.

 

Girls 400m Hurdle Finals-Intermediate Girls 

Mimi Morlu of Providence Day, who didn't even run the hurdles during her freshman season, clocked a very impressive 1:02.01 to finish 4th. This is about a 3 second PR for her. 6th fastest time in NC history.

 

Girls 400m Dash Finals-Intermediate Girls 

PDS' Mimi Morlu finished out her weekend with another PR. Mimi finished 6th with a very fast time of 56.03.

 

Girls 100m Hurdle Finals-Young Women

Latoya James of Cummings won another big-time race. Her time, 13.67, tied her best time ever, but was wind-aided.

 

Girls 100m Hurdle Finals-Intermediate Girls

Sherice Walker of Cummings also placed well in the hurdles. She finished 4th with a 14.72 in the finals.
