Science & Math's boys want to become a 2A dynasty, while Carrboro's girls are out to prove theirs didn't end with last year's loss.
For whatever reason, the NCHSAA 2A classification has, for several years, been weaker as a whole than you would expect it to be (especially on the boys' side). This has been evidenced by the quick drop-off in team depth from the top few teams to the rest of the 16 squads that made it to the last 4 or 5 state meets. This idea has also been exemplified by the way some 1A schools have been able to be immediately competitive after moving up, like Lake Norman Charter and Science & Math. In a division that lacks overall depth, it becomes easier for a single strong program to become dominant over a long stretch of time. Saturday's 2A State Meet, therefore, is a story of two dynasties, one that has existed for several years and one that only exists as a possibility right now.
