Ashlynn Chavis of Scotland county was ranked 8th by NCRunners.com results this outdoor season, but she came up big when it really counted. She won the 4A state title with her best jump of the season up to that point, 18-07. Her jump at states was one inch further than 2nd place Jacinda Evans of Southern Durham.
Ashlynn looks as if she came into the meet ranked 18th . . . yet with a 3 inch personal best (by NCRunners.com results) she was able to pull a great upset.
Was she excited?
I didn't get a chance to speak with her but I saw her on the phone, and she had a fixed smile.
Congrats, Ashlynn!
Latoya James of Burlington Cummings jumped in the final heat because of her 19-05 mark during the season. Latoya earned All-American status with her 5th place finish . . . she came in ranked 8th.
Both girls exceeded expectations and should be very pleased with their outcomes.
