9/20 High School XC Weekend Recap

Sundodger Invitational (WA)

September 20, 2014 University of Washington in Seattle, WA

The US #10 ranked Kamiakin boys of Washington took it to the US #7 ranked Central Catholic of Oregon at the University of Washington hosted Sundodger Invite, while defending NXN champions from Gig Harbor (62 pts) also showed they still have a lot left despite graduations finishing second ahead of Central Catholic (69 pts). The Kamiakin boys were clear team winners averaging 15:37 as a squad with 4 runners well under 16 minutes for 5K and all top 10 finishers with Andrew Snyder (2nd, 15:14), Ben Brooks (4th, 15:28), Phillip Fishburn (7th, 15:36), and Jonathan Lafferty (10th, 15:42).

One of the few returnees from last year's varsity lineup for the defending national champions, Tristan Peloquin carried that championship banner individually winning the Sundodger Invite by 15 seconds with a brand new 5K PR of 15 minutes flat from the 9:09 two miler. Central Catholic had the best pack of the top 3 teams with a 38 second spread, but needed better front running (only 2 runners in top 15) to finish ahead of the Washington squads.

The Peloquin siblings were trying to sweep the individual titles at UW, but a Canadian in Hannah Bennison spoiled that with a runaway victory in 17:19. Still, Tristan's twin sister Brenna Peloquin ran strong and just off her 2013 time at the Sundodger Invite with a runner-up time of 17:42. If only Alexa Efraimson didn't turn pro, the Camas girls could have possibly been considered as one of the nation's top teams. They still might find their way to Nike Cross Nationals despite the loss of Efraimson as they showed with an impressive team win on Saturday tallying 40 points and averaging 18:37 as a squad.
