The Cherryville graduate, bound for Florida State, recovered from bitter disappointment Saturday to claim a spot in World Juniors.

After the ultimate roller-coaster day on Saturday, Trentavis Friday came back with his characteristic strength and determination on Sunday. He pulled away from a field of elite high schoolers and college freshmen down the final stretch, clocking a 20.03 that WOULD be a US high school record...if it weren't for the +2.9 wind. You can bet that Trent doesn't care, though, because he gets to go back to Eugene to run the 200 at World Juniors, and he will certainly be on at least one relay there as well (can we start lobbying for him to be on the 4x400 now?). If you missed it, Friday ran a wind-legal 10.00 in the 100 prelims on Saturday, breaking the national high school record and moving to #2 all time in the world for 19-and-under.
The Cherryville senior was not the only strong North Carolina performer at the meet, although it looks like he will be the only one who gets to go on to World Juniors (only the top 2 athletes advance unless one of them declines the opportunity, and why would they?). Isaiah Moore finished 3rd in the 110 Hurdles with his 13.44 clocking, and Colin Minor also brings home a bronze medal with a 214' 5" hammer throw. Blair Ramsey finished 7th in a relatively quick 1500, posting an impressive 4:34.84 (which equates to 4:55 pace for the 1600), which puts her at NC #2 and US #24 for the season. Quashawn Cunningham benefitted from both the fast pace and the wind in the 200, running 20.83 to move up to NC #5 All-Time and US #9 this season (including windy times).
A few former NC high-schoolers also got into the action as college freshmen. Mollie Williams (Clayton/South Carolina) made the finals of the 100 Hurdlesm, where she finished 8th in 13.93. Brianna Heilsnis (Apex/Clayton State) finished 6th in the hammer throw with a mark of 170' 7". Jasmine Dawson (West Johnston/East Carolina) clocked 11.64 in the 100 Dash prelims to advance to the finals, then followed that with an 11.65 for 7th place. Makayla Roten (West Wilkes/Appalachian State) and Anisia Starege (TC Roberson/Western Carolina) both cleared 5' 5" in the high jump, with Roten tying for 9th and Starege sharing 12th place.
