Jus' Running Relays

Relay

It was a beautiful evening at TC Roberson High School. The temperature was perfect for a track meet. The majority of schools in the Asheville/Hendersonville area were in attendance. There are some talented inviduals in this bunch. Many state champs will come out of Western NC, count on that.

The Jus' Running Relays, was just that . . . relays. The event list included a race that Coach Carpenter said, "It's tradition." That race wasn't the 4x400 or the DMR, but the Phat Boys Relay.

This relay signified the fun and laid back spirit of the entire meet. The field was closed to specators and athletes. There stood one lone sole in the infield, and he stood there with a bucket of chicken. This prize of KFC chicken was for the fastest Phat Boys in the stadium. TC Roberson had a very fast anchor, but they weren't ready for the consistant sprinting of the North Buncombe throwers. North Buncombe took it out hard and their anchor was able to hold on for the victory. Word was it may have been a new meet record . . . the throwers ran 47.9. Their seed-time was 56.00, great improvement!

There were other races though. TC Roberson's girls won the 4x1600 with a lead off leg by Caroline Kirby of about 5:33. They also won th 4x800, running the 3rd fastest time in the state of 10:14. Of course, on their home track, they looked quite dominant . . . winning the shuttle hurdle relay, the 4x100 (sub 50 hand-timed), the DMR & SMR, and then closing the night out with a solid 4:18 in the 4x400. Obviously it was a great night for the TC Roberson girls on the track.

The only relay that TCR didn't win was the 1600m Medley. They had the lead going into the last leg, but Asheville's distance star, Cara Hayes, ran a fine 800 to capture the victory. I believe Cara split 2:31, and she looked like she had plenty more.

Madison's girls won the the discus with a total of 272.63, they won by almost 40'! In the girl's pole vault, North Buncombe won with a total height of 25' 6" They won by over 10'. Roberson's girls won the rest of the field events. I don't have individual results, but I'm pretty sure there was an announcement made that a 24 yr. old School Record was broken in the triple jump.

The boy's meet began with the 4x1600. John Harwell of Asheville, coming off his National Championship in the freshman mile just weeks ago, got his team off to a solid start. Asheville won with a time of 19:33. Two other schools went under 24:00, Franklin and TC Roberson.

West Henderson took the shuttle hurdle relay by over 2 seconds. Josey Weaver of Madison was able to hold off Brevard in the 4x800. He split about 2:05 to anchor them to a victory. Enka won the 4x400 and the 1600m Relay with impressive 400's from multiple athletes. TCR won the 4x100 in 43.4, with Brevard also under 45 seconds. Both teams looked very solid with nice handoffs.

Roberson ran away with the DMR. They saved their best for this event, and it showed. 11:04 is a very solid time, and with competition they are definitely sub-11. It'd be great to see CH and TCR go at it!

In the field events, there were a number of different winners. Discus, Long Jump-Franklin, Shot-Roberson, Triple Jump-West Henderson, Enka-High Jump, Pole Vault-East Henderson. Again, I don't have individual marks, but I know 6' was cleared in the HJ and Kent England of Asheville was busy in the pole vault. There were some very big boys throwing pretty far as I almost was hit a couple times in the discus.

All in all, this was a great meet! Congrats to all the individuals and teams that had record setting days. It was fun to be up in the mountains, thanks for having me.
