Norman Trzakoma (right), known as "Traz" to coaches and athletes, is one of several legendary track/CC coaches recognized.
As part of the NCHSAA's centennial celebration, they have chosen "100 Coaches to Remember." As you might expect, the list includes several coaches who have been involved in track and cross country, including four that everyone in our sport should know (if they don't already):
Stuart Allen, Myers Park: 15 NCHSAA state championships (11 in track, 4 in cross country) between 1956 and 1971.
Russell Blunt, Hillside: 17 NCHSAA state championships (10 in outdoor track, 7 in indoor track) between 1955 and 1996, coaching well into his 80's.
Robert Steele, North Rowan: 15 NCHSAA state championships, including 5 straight between 1994 and 1998; continues to be involved in our sport.
Norman Trzaskoma, RJ Reynolds: 7 NCHSAA state championships, including 5 straight in cross country between 1974 and 1978; teams won state titles in all three running seasons.
