Course record broken at 2006 Springmaid Splash

SPRUCE PINE — Brevard runner Thomas Cason set a new course record in Saturday's Springmaid Splash, a 10K race with four river crossings and steep trails on Springmaid Mountain in Spruce Pine.

Cason, 34, a Brevard College cross-country coach, won in 39 minutes and 40 seconds, finishing ahead of 2005 Shut-in Ridge Run champ Shiloh Mielke and Asheville runner Will Harlan, a four-time winner of the 40-mile Mount Mitchell Challenge.

In the women's race, Alisha Lion, 25, of Hudson, finished first in 44:32:65, followed by Amber Moran of Waynesville and Meadow Tarves of Fletcher. Asheville's Anne Riddle Lundblad, who won the women's race last year, finished fourth overall in the women's race and first for the master's category.
