Outdoor Week 7 in Review

Watauga's girls led off a big weekend for NC athletes at Taco Bell with their US #12 performance in the 4x800.

When I picked this past weekend as my "break weekend" from going to meets, I thought it would be a relatively light weekend in North Carolina (as the major meet was out of state).  Boy, was I wrong!  Great performances were put up at smaller invitationals all across the state this weekend, with too many of them to really draw out highlights.  Of course, North Carolina athletes made a big splash at the Taco Bell Invitational, but there were a lot of other noteworthy marks, as well.

(Note: I got a little backlogged on the daily results last week, and I am just now getting caught up, so some of the weekday meets might not show up yet.)

Lexington boys 4x800 no. 2 S.C. all-time, 7:51.72

COLUMBIA -- Lexington High’s boys relay team continued its impressive late-season run Friday, narrowly capturing first place in the 4x800-meter finals at the opening night of the 20th Annual Taco Bell Track and Field Classic held at Spring Valley High, and setting a meet record in the process.

Shaw's Shakedown: A look at Taco Bell Classic

Year 20!!  Quite a milestone.  It all started with the first “rubber” track at Spring Valley and a commitment by Coach Jones to make it a little bit better each year.  No doubt he does make it better each year.  What a palace Harry Parone stadium has become.  Combine Coach Jones’ desire to put on a meet that athletes will remember at a high school facility that is second to none and you end up with some pretty rich tradition.
