Though its primary purpose is to prepare for Foot Locker or Nike Cross Nationals regional competitions, the Reagan Two-Mile Tune-Up has become a premier event unto itself. Coach Catton also views the race as a chance for runners to boost their college resume by putting in a big 2-mile time while they are still in great shape at the end of cross country training (and while college coaches are still actively recruiting). Runners have routinely put up huge times while stepping down from the 5K, partly due to the great field Coach Catton has been able to put together each year. There have been 8 state champions who have participated in past races; the addition of newly-crowned champs Steve Mulherin and Trevor Sleight now brings the total to 10. Five runners have put up times in this race that put them in the top 25 two-mile times in state history, although several of those have gone on to run faster times later in the year. Five times in the past three years, a runner from this race has made it to Foot Locker Nationals: Blake Williams twice, Jake Hurysz, Thomas Graham, and Scott Morgan.
