The NCHSAA 4A State Championship Lived Up To The Hype

Boys Distance

800 meter

Through the first 400 meters most of the field was still packed together with Ian Delgado (Green Hope) and Haywood Ferguson (South Mecklenburg) leading the group. Down the backstretch with about 300 meters to go Ferguson made the first big move of the race and started his kick. Delgado responded immediately as those two began to separate themselves down the stretch. But it was Delgado waiting for the final 50 meters to make the final pass and take the victory in a new NC #1 time of 1:53.38. Ferguson finished with a big PR and took runner up in 1:54.10. Delgado's Green Hope teammates Matthew Kehn (1:55.18) and Sean Petersen (1:55:53) also earned All-State honors.

1600 meter

Ian Delgado completed the mid-distance double with his victory in the 1600! With the field running a comfortable first three laps the final lap was destined to be quick, and that it was. Delgado split a 57 second final 400 to get the victory over John Tatter (RJ Reynolds) and Anton Idhammar (Cary). Tatter and Idhammar battled to the line and originally Idhammar was said to had finished 2nd and Tatter 3rd. When the official results were posted and announced shortly later it was said Tatter had edged Idhammer by .005 running 4:19.794 to Idhammar's 4:19.799.

Ares Epps (Green Hope) took 4th and captured an All-State finish.

3200 meter

John Tatter showed why he is considered one of the best runners over 3200 meters in the country ending his RJ Reynolds with a victory Saturday in 9:22.72. Ryan Brown (Broughton) finished 2nd, Marshall Williamson (Myers Park) finished 3rd, and Peyton Barish (Green Hope) finished 4th. The top four runners are seniors with the 5th-11th places being returners for next year, so we will see some fast times for years to come.
