As a double whammy of weather descends on the state and the Governor declares a state of emergency, the two biggest meets of the season are forced to shut down.
In anticipation of two major rain-producing weather events this weekend, both the Great American Cross Country Festival and the Wendy's Invitational have been forced to cancel. Neither meet will be rescheduled.
What could cause the two biggest meets of the North Carolina cross country season to shut down? Well, the weekend is looking more and more like a once-in-a-decade weather event. First, a major low-pressure system is settling over the state, bringing major rainfall and winds potentially gusting up to 30 miles per hour. Then, Hurricane Joaquin is expected to sideswipe the North Carolina coast, bringing even more rain to the better part of the state, along with more strong winds. The forecasts are calling for large amounts of rain pretty much everywhere in the state, leading our Governor to declare a state of emergency.
