Parkland's girls had their way in all the relays except the 800 SMR, where Cary was able to squeak by for the win.
The weather was NOT friendly to the Apex Relays this past weekend. As windy as it was in the Charlotte area, it was also sunny all day, and the temperature was warm enough to keep the competitors reasonably comfortable. In the Raleigh area, though, the wind was stronger and the initial temperatures were cooler, and that definitely had an impact on the performances in the sprints and some of the field events.
Despite this, the meet produced a number of top-notch performances (as is usual for this event, one of the most historic and exclusive in the state).
- Parkland's girls swept the traditional sprint relays, running NC #1 times in all three: 48.04 in the 4x100, 1:39.53 US #13 in the 4x200, and 3:50.88 US #20 in the 4x400. Their only loss of the day came in the 800 SMR, where Cary ran 1:44.84 US #1 to Parkland's 1:45.20 US #2.
The big headline was a spectacular girls' 1600 that saw Ryen Frazier (Ravenscroft) post a US #1 time of 4:43.22 while leading 3 other girls under 5 minutes. Malia Ellington (Community School of Davidson) finished second in 4:54.91, holding off Maysa Araba (Carrboro, 4:55.50 US #19 NC #11 All-Time) and Elly Henes (Green Hope, 4:56.41 NC #14 All-Time). In the boys' race, Connor Peeples (Cardinal Gibbons) ran a NC #1 time of 4:21.61.
Other Highlights:
- K'Lynn Beal (Broughton) set a new PR of 39' 6.5" NC #1 US #13 in the triple jump, and also jumped 18' 9.25" NC #4 in the long jump.
- Apex teammates Anna Eaton and Zoe Early vaulted 13' NC #1 and 12' 6" NC #2 respectively, cementing themselves at the top of the state rankings.
- Magnus Herweyer (Carrboro) continued to throw the discus well, hitting 159' 0" Saturday to move up to NC #4.
- Terry Sanford's boys also had a strong day in the relays, running 42.75 NC #2 in the 4x100 and 1:28.05 NC #1 in the 4x200.
- Green Hope and Millbrook dueled in the boys' 4x400, with the Falcons winning in 3:21.91 NC #2 and the Wildcats finished in 3:22.30 for NC #3.
- Cardinal Gibbons took the boys' 4x800 in 8:00.59 NC #1 US #25, while Leesville Road's girls won in 9:27.28 NC #1 US #15 (without Nevada Mareno, remember).
- Broughton's boys ran 17:56.63 in the 4x1600, which puts them at US #5 this season in the rarely-run event. Green Hope's girls won the 4x1600 (again), this time in 21:29.57 US #7.
- Cardinal Gibbons' girls ran 12:29.04 in the DMR, the top time in the state this year.
