Weekend 4 Coverage Central

The Raleigh Relays HS 3200 always dominates the state rankings in that event, and usually produces nationally-ranked times.

Raleigh Relays (NC State, Raleigh)

Coverage

Highlights

  • Ian Milder (Mount Tabor) took over a moderately-paced race with three to go, then dropped the hammer over the last 800.  With a final 400 of 61 unofficially, Milder pulled away from the field and claimed the top spot in the national rankings by running 8:53.99 US #1 NC #4 All-Time.  William Roberson (Broughton) wasn't able to close on Milder over the final lap, but he was able to break 9 with his US #3 NC #9 All-Time mark of 8:58.88.

  • Ryen Frazier (Ravenscroft) also displayed great finishing speed, opening up a 30 meter lead seemingly in the blink of an eye with two to go, and holding steady through the finish as Malia Ellington (Community School of Davidson) tried to rally.  Frazier's 10:26.01 is US #2 NC #5 All-Time.  Ellington may have lost this round to Frazier (and the two juniors are likely to have many more rounds!), but her consolation prize is a new PR of 10:30.07 US #4 NC # 6 All-Time.

  • There were 7 boys under 9:10 and 14 under 9:20 overall, including these outstanding performances:

    • Jason Menzies (Lafayette VA) 9:00.36 US #6

    • Philip Hall (Terry Sanford) 9:03.03 US #9 NC #18 All-Time

    • Brent Demarest (Porter Gaud SC) 9:04.25 US #12

    • Zach Boone (Mitchell) 9:06.56 US #15 NC #21 All-Time

    • Ben Huffman (Providence Day) 9:08.62 US #20

  • In the girls race, 7 girls ran under 10:40, and an astounding 19 broke 11 minutes:

    • Kayla Montgomery (Mount Tabor) 10:32.21 US #7 NC #9 All-Time

    • Bonnie Angermeier (Blacksburg VA) 10:33.75 US #8

    • Mary Grace Doggett (Cardinal Gibbons) 10:35.39 US #9 NC #13 All-Time

    • Jennifer Fleming (Blacksburg VA) 10:37.90 US #13
