The man who posted the best 800/1600 double at the NCHSAA State Championships to no surprise comes in at the top of these rankings. Andrew Brooks (Broughton) ran 1:53.30 in the 800 this season, good for NC#1 and 4:16.54 in a 1600 conversion. Brooks was the NCHSAA 4A 800 State Champion this outdoor season and after taking 3rd place in a loaded 1600 field. Brooks will attend UNC Chapel Hill in the fall.
Two juniors rank out 2nd and 3rd on this list in Ian Delgado (Green Hope) and Cameron Ponder (Mt. Tabor). Delgado ranks as the #2 800 runner in these rankings behind Brooks, while Ponder the 27th 800m runner, but is carried by a strong 1600 PR of 4:10.00 from Penn Relays where he took 3rd. Ponder is more of a 3200 runner than an 800 meter guy, so it's impressive he grades out so high in these combined rankings.
Similar to Ponder, Ian Shanklin (Page) is ore of a long distance runner as he was an All-American in the 5000 at New Balance Outdoor Nationals this season. Shanklin has great range all the way down to 400 as he took apart in Page's 4x400 and also powered their 4x800 to qualify for the NCHSAA State Championships. Noah Graham (Brevard) was the NCHSAA 2A 1600 Champion and 800 Runner Up as he was denied a triple crown. Graham and Shanklin will be teammates next year at NC State University.
