Schools from all over the nation are coming to run on the track that hosts OUR state meet, and our athletes are ready to compete.
This edition of the New Balance Outdoor Nationals might lack some of the most elite track stars in the nation, due to the fact that USATF Junior Nationals is also going on this weekend. Nonetheless, there will be a tremendous collection of talent on display in Greensboro, starting Thursday and continuing through Saturday night. The NSSF always puts on a great show to go with the highly-competitive events, with entertaining announcers and a few big names on hand to add some pizazz to the affair. North Carolina Events to Watch
Championship 200, Boys and Girls: Athletes from the Tar Heel State have loaded up in this event! Joseph Horton, Harvey McSwain II, and Cameron Hudson are ranked 1-2-3 in the state, while Jahmaal Daniel and Da'Quan Smalls are 5th and 6th. There is nobody entered in this race who has gone under 21 seconds this year, so the NC boys should be right in the thick of things. On the girls' side, Alexis Murphy and Tyler Brockington will try to meet up in the finals to repeat their duel from the 4A state meet, and they will be supported by a large cast of fellow North Carolinians: Marissa Bellamy, Courtney Crawford, Jasmine Dawson, Aalayah Faulcon, Markia Franklin, Sabrina Moore, and Janivette Perez. They will have to contend with Jada Martin (MLK, GA 23.65), Ky Westbrook (Chandler, AZ 23.75), and Sabria Hadley (Lake Wales, FL 23.78), who will surely be setting the tone in both the prelims and the finals.
Championship Girls 1 Mile Run: The top two girls' distance stars in the state should be in the same section, and that will be fun to watch. Defending NBN champion Wesley Frazier comes in having run a North Carolina all-time record of 4:42.78 last weekend at the adidas Grand Prix. Sammy George was last seen in the blazing-fast 800 at the NCRunners Elite Tune-Up, showing that she certainly has the speed to reach for the low-4:40's. Unless the race goes out tactically, I have a feeling that we're not done revising the records on NCPrepTrack.com...
Championship Girls Pole Vault: Coming off a PR of 13' 2.25" last weekend, Sydney White seems poised to compete for the title (she has been the runner-up at THREE New Balance events). She will enter in a virtual dead heat with Kimyanna Rudolph (IN), but there are plenty of vaulters just behind those two who could catch fire and have a career day. Kristen Lee will also be in the competition, and she would really like to get to 12' 7.25", which would be a new PR for her.
North Carolina Athletes to Watch
Alexis Murphy, Apex, 100m Dash-200m Dash: Before heading off to South Carolina, Murphy should still be able to find motivation for one last set of big performances. She can use these races to establish, once and for all, that she is the best sprinter in the state this year (and her case is already very strong, although injuries have prevented some of her main rivals from making their cases). It will take the race of her life to make a splash in the finals against the competition in this meet, though.
Gabrielle Gray, High Point Central, 100m Dash: an injury prevented Gabby from getting the chance to defend her 4A 100m title this year. If she is healthy, she still has the potential to put up big times. There is always the possiblity of another battle with Alexis Murphy to establish which girl will end the season at the top of the rankings!
Ariah Graham, Wakefield, 400m Dash: the New Balance Indoor Nationals champion in the 400 will be out to earn another title, after a spring season slowed by minor injuries. The Wakefield girls are not entered in a ton of relay races (just their signature 4x400), and that should leave Graham fresher for her attenpt at a second championship.
Alexis Perry, Jordan, High Jump: For the first time that I can remember, the best all-around female athlete in the state will be focusing on only one event. That should give her the chance to check off one of the few goals that she hasn't achieved in her amazing spring season: 5' 9".
Wesley Frazier, Ravenscroft, 5000m-Two Mile-One Mile-DMR: After winning the 5000 and the mile last year, as well as running very well in a two-mile race that featured two sub-10 runners up front, Frazier is back with one extra event, making her perhaps the busiest athlete at the meet outside of the multis. She and her Ravenscroft teammates will be competing in the Distance Medley Relay, which is only 25 minutes after her individual mile race. Expect her to be gunning especially for the title in the two mile, as that's the one that has eluded her so far in her career.
Jonathan Addison, Enloe, High Jump-Long Jump: After clearing 6' 10" during the winter season, Addison only managed 6' 8" this spring, and you know he wants to up that number before the season ends. He has also jumped in the upper 23-foot range for the long jump, and I am sure he would like to break through the 24-foot barrier this weekend.
Mollie Williams, Clayton, 100m Hurdles: After her breakout race at the 4A State Meet, Williams is set to challenge for a national title. It looks like she will be the top seed in the race, but you can always expect stiff competition at New Balance Nationals, and she will have to be sharp to bring home the win and further North Carolina's reputation in the hurdles.
Thomas Graham, Cary Academy, One Mile-Two Mile: After running very well in the 5000 last year at this meet, Graham has opted to run the mile and the two-mile this week. If he is fit, he is certainly capable of running under 9 minutes again, and I know he would like to close in on the 4:10 mark for the mile, as well. This might be his last hurrah in the mile, as most observers feel he will be running longer distances for Stanford, but you never know what could happen in the future. A breakthrough here could alter the direction he and his coaches choose during his time in Palo Alto.
Knightdale Boys, 4x100-4x200-4x400-1600 Medley: In addition to Horton's 200, the boys from Knightdale are loaded up in the relays. If they can drop into the upper 1:25's for the 4x200 and duplicate their 3:15 clocking for the 4x400, they will definitely be in contention in both of those. The 4x100 and 1600 Medley might be tougher challenges, though.
Wakefield Girls, 4x400: The Wolverines led the nation during indoor season, winning the championship at New Balance Indoor Nationals. After nearly a month off to heal and rest after the 4A state meet, hopefully they are ready to end the year with one more huge performance.
Parkland Girls, 4x100-4x200-4x400: This probably isn't the year that the Mustangs break through on a national level, but it should be valuable experience for such a young crew (all 9th- and 10th-graders). Sometimes, you watch the races to see who is the best right now, and sometimes you watch them with an eye to the future. This could be a preview of great things to come for the Parkland girls, and with the reduced talent pool in the sprints thanks to USATF Junior Nationals, they could be more competitive than you might expect.

Schools from all over the nation are coming to run on the track that hosts OUR state meet, and our athletes are ready to compete.
This edition of the New Balance Outdoor Nationals might lack some of the most elite track stars in the nation, due to the fact that USATF Junior Nationals is also going on this weekend. Nonetheless, there will be a tremendous collection of talent on display in Greensboro, starting Thursday and continuing through Saturday night. The NSSF always puts on a great show to go with the highly-competitive events, with entertaining announcers and a few big names on hand to add some pizazz to the affair. If you have some free time this weekend, come out to Belk Track at NC A&T and catch the action--you won't be disappointed!
