The Ronald Reagan senior didn't begin to realize her potential until recently, but she is making the most of it now.
For the first two years of her running career, Ashley Brubaker only competed during the winter. Her first cross country season was during her junior year, and she had a season best of 21:58. Her first spring season followed, during which she ran 2:24 for the 800. Before this school year, she had never run the mile, according to the MileSplit database. This year? 19:20 for the 5K, 5:05.52 for a full mile, and a commitment to Wake Forest to further her running career. Check out her improvement graph for the 5k. The scary part is, you get the sense that she's nowhere close to being done yet. This meteoric rise would be enough to inflate the ego of most high school kids, but Ashley seems equal parts stunned and simply enjoying the ride, and she shows no signs of letting this go to her head. Breaking the 5 minute barrier would put her among the top 20 female 1600 runners in state history, after having run only the 500 for her first two years of high school! There will be some incredible races among the 4A girls distance powers this spring, and Ashley will be right in the middle of them.
