And the late season push from the Hidden Valley girls begins now. As the case has been over the past few years with the Blacksburg girls out the gate fast and the Hidden Valley girls starting out a little sluggish and not at full strength, the Greensboro Invitational showed a glimpse of what is coming between two of the state's best teams when they meet again next week at Great American and at the district, region, and state championships.
At Hagan Stone Park in Greensboro, the Hidden Valley girls ran very close times to match up with Blacksburg's times from Maymont albeit on different courses. The race winner Wesley Frazier of Ravenscroft (NC), a rising national star as a freshmen blew away another field with a 17 minute performance in a 17:50 victory. Meanwhile, Annie LeHardy (pictured right by Hetzal Hartley) of Hidden Valley ran her best race of the season and appears to be working herself back into her near state title form from a year ago with a runner-up performance of 18:36 and defeating some of the top tier runners in the state of North Carolina.
Following LeHardy were three teammates finishing among the top 10 places and around the 19 minute barrier with Claire Sibley (7th, 18:56), Mary Catherine Sowder (9th, 19:06), and Haley Cutright (10th, 19:07). Coach Daniel King got a much better race out of fifth runner Lindsey Skolrood (23rd, 19:50) with a season best time for her and complete the team scoring with 50 points, which put Hidden Valley well ahead of the runners-up from Chapel Hill High School (138 pts). Hidden Valley will have two big meets coming up against national caliber competition at Great American next week and then travel all the way down to the Woodlands in Texas for the Nike South Invitational.
