Preseason races have begun in North Carolina, with several scrimmages scattered around the state this past week as well as the upcoming one. Traditionally, the Wake County Kickoff has been the most anticipated and most informative of these introductory races, as it gives us a glimpse of where the powerful Mideast 4A teams stand at this point of the year. On Saturday, Jeremy Brown (Broughton) and Nevada Mareno (Leesville Road) fired the first individual shots of the 2015 fall season, as both broke the respective 3K course records at WakeMed. Both also won commandlingly, Brown by 9 seconds over Connor Peeples (Cardinal Gibbons) and Mareno by an astounding 47 seconds over Sophie Ebihara (Cardinal Gibbons).
The meet separates the juniors and seniors into one race and the freshmen and sophomores into another, so of course we wanted to know what the results would look like if the races were put together! Cardinal Gibbons came out on top of the combined girls team results, getting a nice boost from their youngsters to edge out Leesville Road. On the boys' side, Broughton predictably finished with a dominant score, leaving Cardinal Gibbons and Green Hope to battle for second. Both races fell very close to our Preseason Countdown, I should also note!
