With Warm Weather, NC Finally Makes a National Impact: NCHSAA 4A State Meet Recap
Girls Field Events Highlights
Sydnei Murphy (Apex) achieved a long-time goal in the long jump, posting a mark of 20' 3" NC #1 US #7 NC #4 All-Time to finally break through the 20-foot barrier. She also won the triple jump at 40' 0.75", and coupled with her 3rd-place finishes in the 100 and 200 it was enough to earn her MVP honors for the meet. Jamie Stacey (Ashley) finished second in both jumps, going 39' 0.5" NC #4 in the triple.
Once again, Khayla Dawson (Olympic) and Alycia Springs (Mallard Creek) went head-to-head in the throws, and once again nothing was resolved. They ended up with a split, as Dawson took the shot put with a 47' 11" and Springs claimed the discus by throwing 142' 9". They'll be back for one more year, which could be filled with 50-foot and 150-foot throws!
Jordyn Brown (Jordan) won the high jump by clearing 5' 6", edging out Kenya Livingston (Rocky River) on misses.
Apex teammates Anna Eaton and Zoe Early went 1-2 in the pole vault, clearing 12' 6" and 12' 0" respectively.
Continuing the Apex success in the field events, Cara King won the discus and the shot put. Both marks were NC #1, and both were overall state meet records. That gave King 4 individual wins (2 on the track and 2 in the field), and gave the Cougars 5 wins (and a second) in the girls' field events.
