NCHSAA 1A Regionals Mega Preview

Will Louisburg's Vanisha Wilshire take home three 1A East titles this weekend?
Looks like it.

    1A East Regional

    Athletes to Watch
    • Vanisha Wilshire (Louisburg) is the top seed in high jump, the long jump, and the triple jump by huge margins, and could possibly make an appearance on the podium for discus as well.
    • Nancy Walker (Southside) is the top seed in the 800m run and 1600m run.
    • Marlee Peterson (Camden County) looks to be taking home wins in both hurdle events.
    • Trevor Carr (Camden County) is a contender for first in the 200m and 400m dash, with close competition from the number two seeds.
    • Based upon seed times, Allen Garcia (Camden County) should run away with the 1600m, but will have to work for a win in the 800m.
    Teams to Watch
    • Lejeune boys come out on top in the virtual meet, but Southside might just give them a run for their money.
    • For the girls, Pamlico county and Southside should battle it out for first.

    1A Mideast Regional

    Athletes to Watch
    • Desire Brown (Heide Trask) looks to be running away with a few victories this weekend. Brown should dominate the competition in the 100, 200, and 400m dashes.
    • Christy Witcher (Raleigh Charter) claims the top seeds in the 1600m and 3200m with comfortable leads in both events.
    • Fred Evans (West Columbus) could take home the 100 and 200m dash, although Montrel Williams (Union) and Keshaun Canady (Wallace-Rose) are both in contention.
    • Madison Daniel (Research Triangle) looks to have the 800m locked down, but will have to outrun his teammate for a win in the 1600m.
    • Tyquan Davis (Heide Trask) could claim three titles in the long jump, high jump, and triple hump, but he will have to work hard for each title.
    Teams to Watch
    • In a meet where every point matters, Heide Trask and Rosewood will battle it out for the team title for boys. Hopefully a tie is not in their future.
    • If all goes according to plan, the Whiteville girls should run away with this one.

    1A Midwest Regional

    Athletes to Watch
    • Justin Kenard (North Stokes) has the potential to sweep the 400m, 800m, and 1600m if he can outkick Matthew Rodgers (Walkertown) in the 1600m.
    • Cordell France (Mount Airy) should easily run away with victories in the 100m and 200m dash.
    • Sophomore Avianna Hopkins (Queens Grant) dominates the discus and the shot put for the ladies and should come out victorious.
    • Shakai Ward (Elkin) is the top seed in an interesting combination of the 100m dash, 400m dash and 800m run. Ward will really have to kick it in for a win against the number two seed in the 100m and 400m dashes.
    Teams to Watch
    • Elkin girls have the top seed going into the 1A Midwest Regional, but North Stokes is narrowly behind them and could come out on top with a couple of key points.
    • As for the boys, if North Stokes doesn't come out victorious, with a predicted lead of over 30 points, then something went terribly wrong.

    1A West Regional

    Athletes to Watch
    • If you don't know the name Malia Ellington, you will soon. The senior from Community School of Davidson is seeded to sweep the 400m, 800m, 1600m, and 3200m, although Peyton Hillman (Pine Lake) might give Ellington a run for her money in the 400m.
    • Kylie Polsgrove (Avery County) holds a comfortable lead in the first seed of both hurdle events.
    • Mitchell's Zach Boone should run away with uncontested victories in the 1600m and 3200m.
    • Foster Stroup (Murphy) looks to have the male hurdles covered as he enters as the top seed in both.
    • Jacob Whitaker (Andrews) has comfortable leads for the shot put and discus.
    • Tyler Leek of Hayesville looks to have the long and triple jump taken care of as he is the top seed in both.
    Teams to Watch
    • Swain County girls have a nice thirty point cushion in the virtual meet seedings for the first place finish.
    • Murphy and Hayesville boys will have a nice battle on the track this weekend for what looks to be a very close race for the team title.
