3A Regionals Mega-Preview

Even amid a loaded 3A Midwest Regional, Kylie McMillan (Southern Guilford) stands out. Her state meet MVP campaign begins Saturday at Weddington!

3A East Regional

Athletes to Watch:
  • Courtney Warner (C.B. Aycock): 100 and 200
  • Distance runners Emme Fisher (West Carteret), Haley Schaeffer (Jacksonville), Arden Vessie (Corinth Holders)
  • Vincent Siders (Jacksonville): 100 and 200
  • Gable Dershem (Cleveland): 1600 and 3200
  • Andrew Spear (West Carteret): Hurdles
  • Ian West (Fike): Pole Vault
Teams to Watch:
  • West Carteret's girls are the favorites, with Jacksonville close enough that they have a legitimate chance to win. Sleeper candidates include Nash Central, Cleveland, and Corinth Holders.
  • On the boys' side, the team scores are shaping up to be very close. West Carteret, Cleveland, and Rocky Mount could all take the win, and Northern Nash could sneak in there, as well.

3A Mideast Regional

Athletes to Watch:
  • Girls distance runners Clare McNamara (Chapel Hill), Megan Vaughn (Cardinal Gibbons), Sophie Ebihara (Cardinal Gibbons), and more.
  • Tamilia Wright (Williams): 300 Hurdles, Long & Triple Jump
  • Kacia Vines (Cedar Ridge): Long & Triple Jump
  • Rachel Breasseale (Union Pines): High Jump
  • Connor Peeples (Cardinal Gibbons): 800 & 1600
Teams to Watch:
  • For the girls, it's a distance-fueled duel between Chapel Hill and Cardinal Gibbons, who enter with virtually identical rankings. Eastern Guilford appears to be close enough to pull of an upset if one of the two front-runners struggles.
  • Cardinal Gibbons and Chapel Hill also grade out well in the boys' scores, but Terry Sanford is also right there, making this a three-team dogfight.

3A Midwest Regional

Athletes to Watch:
  • Kadarius Lotharp (Sun Valley): 100 and 200
  • Ty Jaye Robbins-Lockhart (Piedmont): 200 and 400
  • Mitchell Resor (Weddington): 800 and 1600
  • Julian Gaines (Marvin Ridge): Long & Triple Jump
  • Christopher Garrick (Marvin Ridge): High Jump & Triple Jump
  • Pole Vaulters Tristian Shaver (Ledford) and Bailey Frederick (Marvin Ridge)
  • Kylie McMillan (Southern Guilford): 100, 200, 100H, and 300H
  • Lexi King (Marvin Ridge): 1600 and 3200
  • Long & Triple Jumpers Khaila Hall (West Rowan), Cambria Shuford (Statesville), Imani Bennett (Southern Guilford), Mikaela Siebert (Cuthbertson), and more.
  • Elizabeth Olesen (Hickory Ridge): High Jump
  • Shaye Stegall (Marvin Ridge): Pole Vault
Teams to Watch:
  • Marvin Ridge boys first, Weddington second, unless something weird happens.
  • Marvin Ridge girls first, Southern Guilford second, with Cuthbertson in striking range.

3A West Regional

Athletes to Watch:
  • Pia Mackie (Asheville): 200 and 400
  • Distance runners Anna Vess (A.C. Reynolds) and Brooke Turner (Tuscola)
  • Marissa Scott (Freedom): 100H, 300H, Long Jump
  • Bailey Waldbart (East Henderson): Pole Vault
  • Corey Thompson (East Gaston): 400, 110H, 300H
  • Tanis Baldwin (East Henderson): whichever distance races he wants
  • Tyson Fortenberry (Ashbrook): Shot Put and Discus Throw
  • Asheville jumpers Noah Tyson, Nate Tyson, and Mekhi McGuyver
  • Xzavier Robinson (Ashbrook): High Jump
Teams to Watch:
  • A.C. Reynolds will dominate the girls' team scores, but there could be an interesting battle for second between Ashbrook, Forest View, and possible Pisgah as well.
  • Similarly, Asheville's boys look like prohibitive favorites, but the boys' second-place candidates are incredibly close: Forestview, Ashbrook, North Buncombe, and A.C. Reynolds all score within 4 points of each other in the virtual meet.
