Frances Massey powers an East Lincoln team that ranks very high in the classification, helping her conference to the top spot as well.
NCRunners rates conferences by looking at the Returning Team Rankings for the classification, and then assigning points for each conference according to where its teams rank (1 for first, 2 for second, etc). Points for both boys and girls rankings are added together (a minimum of 3 ranked teams for each gender are required), and those totals are used to generate the top 5 conferences. In the case of the NCHSAA 2A conferences, the talent is REALLY spread out - the top 25 boys teams come from 16 conferences, and the top 25 girls teams compete in 14 different conferences. As a result, there isn't a clear favorite, and all of the top 5 conferences below scored well over 100 points (for contrast, the top 1A conference scored 45).
Top 5 NCHSAA 2A Conferences
1. Southern District 7: a little stronger with girls teams, but solid on the boys side as well.
2. Northern Carolina: good boys teams at the top, and good depth among girls teams.
3. Western Piedmont Athletic: a balanced conference that should be very competitive for the boys' title.
4. Western Highlands: lacks a top-10 girls team, but has several teams clustered together.
5. South Mountain Athletic: depth is thin, otherwise this conference would be much higher.
