2014 Outdoor Preview: Boys Field Events

Isaiah Moore (Cummings) is one of NC's few nationally-ranked jumpers, but the state is loaded with depth in the field events.

The lists below are separated into the state's top national-caliber stars, plus those athletes that should be contenders at the state meet.  Only FAT times were used to determine these lists.  There is always someone who doesn't quite make the list, or improves enough to become a "surprise" contender - if you think someone that's not in this article deserves recognition, add their name in the comments section!

Overall:

Aside from Moore, North Carolina doesn't have many athletes threatening the national rankings in the field events.  North Carolina DOES have great depth and highly competitive events, and the battle for the state rankings will be intense every year.

  • Isaiah Moore (Cummings): 24' 8.5" Long Jump US #2, 6' 7" High Jump; 23' 11.5" Long Jump this winter US #4

  • Myles Lazarou (Platinum Sports): 6' 8.75"

  • Kimani Hoffman (Knightdale): 47' 11.75" Triple Jump US #18;  48' 3.5" Triple Jump US #8 & 22' 11" Long Jump this winter

NCHSAA 4A

You always expect this classification to have depth, but the surprising thing is that the top-end returning talent is a little thinner than in past years (at least for now, as athletes will certainly step up to fill the gaps).

  • Kory Jones (Hoke): 6' 6" High Jump

  • Jamie Brown (Knightdale): 6' 6" High Jump

NCHSAA 3A

The throws are absolutely loaded in this classification (two 50-footers from this winter didn't even make this list!).  There also seems to be good depth in the jumps, especially the triple jump.  No dominant favorites here - every field event should be hotly contested at the state meet.

  • Jaquell Bryant (Rocky Mount): 6' 6" High Jump

  • Andrew Hower (Jesse Carson): 6' 6" High Jump this winter

  • Jonathan Marino (Marvin Ridge): 22' 1" Long Jump (22' 5.5" this winter)

  • Kalen McNeil (Northeast Guiford): 22' 7" Long Jump

  • Noah Tyson (Asheville): 46' 7.5" Triple Jump (46' 4" this winter)

  • Chris Patterson (West Rowan): 45' 3" Triple Jump

  • Mekhi McGuyver (Asheville): 45' 0.5" Triple Jump (46' 2" this winter)

  • Corey Ginley (East Henderson): 14' 8.5" Pole Vault (15' 1" this winter)

NCHSAA 2A

This is shaping up to be an insanely competitive classification, with multiple contenders in nearly every event.  You know, except for the long jump, because Isaiah Moore.

  • Alexis Archie (North Rowan): 49' 4.75" Shot Put;

  • Derrick Wheeler (North Brunswick): 49' 0.75" Shot Put this winter

  • William Richardson (Cummings): 49' 2" Shot Put

  • Chris Baumgarner (Draughn): 141' 8" Discus Throw

  • Dijoun Huitt (Bunker Hill): 44' 8.5" Triple Jump

NCHSAA 1A

Lejeune's Richardson is one of the state's best returning long jumpers, and there should be serious competition for the high jump and shot put titles this spring.

  • Ty Simmons (East Carteret): 6' 3" High Jump

  • Clyvester Speight (Pamlico County): 6' 2" High Jump

  • Jamaz Richardson (Lejeune): 23' 0.5" Long Jump

NCISAA 3A

It's clear that Ravenscroft and Charlotte Latin put a lot of emphasis on field events.  With those athletes, both teams should content for a state title.

  • Josh McCoy (Ravenscroft): 13' 6" pole vault (12' 6" this winter), 6' 4" High Jump

  • Garrett Anderson (Ravenscroft): 13' 6" Pole Vault; 13' 0" this winter

  • Donavan Gilmore (Wesleyan Christian): 6' 4" High Jump

  • Gregory Harper (Ravenscroft): 22' 2.5" Long Jump, 44' 3.75" Triple Jump

  • Jab Blazevich (Charlotte Christian): 47' 1.75" Shot Put

  • Dalton Friel (Christ School): 143' 0" Discus Throw, 46' 8" Shot Put

NCISAA 1A/2A

The addition of Abraham (formerly of Metrolina Christian) makes this a much more competitive division in the throws than you would expect for the size of the schools.  There is at least one athlete in each jump that can compete with anyone in the state, although the pole vault is thin (which is normal for this classification where budgets can be as small as the schools).

  • Marcus Abraham (Victory Christian): 49' 5" Shot Put this winter; PR's of 55' 0" and 162' 0.5"

  • Ricky Smith (Davidson Day): 47' 8" Shot Put, 127' 4" Discus Throw

  • Jake Helms (Davidson Day): 127' 0.5" Discus Throw

  • Tremayne Fuller (Fayetteville Christian): 6' 5" High Jump

  • Shawn Lipscomb (Cresset Christian): 22' 1.75" Long Jump

  • Jan Leuhr (Westchester Country Day): 42' 3.75" Triple Jump

  • Colter Pierce (Asheville Christian): 12' 0" Pole Vault
